Publisher's Summary

I'm Olivia Carter, a covenless witch.

Most witches have a coven. Not me. For me, the protection a coven offers does not outweigh the risk of being discovered.

I've worked odd jobs here and there peddling (mostly) legal potions I brew when I can. But when an opportunity to work for the vampires fell in my lap, I took it.

I heal the people they feed on and don't ask too many questions.

After less than six months working this gig, a girl turns up dead, drained of blood.

Of course, I am the first person the police pay a visit to. However, it's not me they want to blame it on. They want my employer. I might want to stay under the radar, but lying about murder is not something I do.

Unfortunately, my favorite vampire and best friend has been missing for a week.

To find my friend and the real murderer, I'll have to use the magic I've been hiding and hope no one finds out. That won't be easy with a coven of witches tossing fireballs at my head and a persistent detective who might be stalking me.

Borrowed Magic is a pause-resisting urban fantasy with a sassy heroine, vampires that don't sparkle, and magic that's unique and refreshing.

This one is unfortunately not for me.

This is hard to write. I had a hard time getting through this. It didn't feel as thought there was much depth to the characters and the story itself was also lacking here. In reading the summary, I was very interested in the book but, unfortunately, I didn't feel like it delivered. I felt a bit bored listening to it. I was just not very impressed with the author. Normally I like the narration of Laurel Schroeder. Again, I felt bored. Now, because I normally like her I am thinking this too falls back on the story as opposed to the narration but I felt like I had to give it three stars because I really didn't enjoy the narration this time either. It just seemed a bit flat to me and I have not felt that way about her before...maybe she couldn't get into the book either? I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Hopefully better luck next time. Maybe it was just my own personal tastes. I purposely didn't look at any other reviews in an effort to keep my opinion from being influenced by others so maybe I am the minority here...?

Laurel Schroeder ruining books yet again

Laurel Schroeder. Laurel F-IN Schroeder. I bought this book before realizing who was narrating it. If you are familiar with my reviews (doubtful) then you know my long battle of literally hating this narrator. She sounds like she’s plugging her nose and her voice fluctuations are atrocious. Yet Audible keeps hiring her to narrate these books. Some great books with amazing storylines that I want to listen to SO BADLY but I cannot get past this narration. How ANYONE can is truly beyond my understanding.

I will try, ohhhh how I try, but I’ll be driving and thinking about my day at work which is NOT what I want to be doing while listening to great books that DESERVE my attention. I can’t even follow the dang story line because I’m always tuning it out or I have to go back and try to listen again.

I literally can’t help it because this girl gives me a headache when I try to pay attention to her. The male voices... good grief I don’t want to get started. Such a major turn off when I listen to “flirty” scenes with this girl trying to sound sexy. Eww just ewww and just eww! I just can’t.

I will be getting my credit back audible and if you can give me a WARNING next time I try to purchase what sounds like a great story but is narrated by Laurel F-ING Schroeder please tell me to stop and look at the narrator name PLEASE FOR MY SANITY. I would forever be grateful.

no second book for me.

I won't buy a second book. The performance on this book was atrocious. maybe if she would have got a different performer it might have been better but I could not take the long drawn-out voice and pauses in between each sentence.

Action packed adventure..

This book had everything it needed to hold my interest. The ending indicates there will be more to come, I just wish it wasn't in small installments. The narration was well done and animated. I would recommend this book for a short action packed paranormal listen. I was given a free copy of this book at my request and have voluntarily decided to leave this review.

Magical Beginning

I really enjoyed this story. I was captivated from start to finish. I wish it were longer because I do feel that the world building and backstory needs more explanation but being as this is only book 1 and the subsequent books are at least double in pages I have faith that the author will elaborate in future books. The narrator was on point in bringing the story and characters to life - I would not hesitate to listen to more of her work. I look forward to more in this series and from this author and narrator

Quite Enjoyable and Quick

This story was entertaining and kept me wanting more. I was dumbfounded when it ended! I needed to know what happened next! Olivia had moments if being annoying, but given all the situations she found herself in... her reactions weren't too terrible. Laurel Schroeder was fantastic worth her narration. Each character was distinct with their own personality. I have to know what happens next!

A Short Teaser

A short but good start to this series. It's amusing and we'll developed.
The narrator's voice is clear and her characters are easy to follow. The dialogue is done really well, but I felt the descriptive parts were a little flat at times. But still did not take away from story.
This audio was given to me free, and I voluntarily gave this review..

Foxe can write urban fantasy with the best of them

The story is everything I wanted it to be -- a relatable protagonist, dirty magic, dangerous covens. It's really well-written and just fast-paced enough to be fun, and deep enough in characterization to be interesting. I feel like for the stellar quality, this book is extremely underrated. Now, the narrator.... *sigh* She made me want to scoop my eyeballs out for the first half an hour with her horrible clipped sentences, and monotone. Luckily, the story had me so hooked that I got used to it.
