Publisher's Summary

A handful of years ago I moved with my wife to a house on a quiet street in a quiet town and lay quietly in a room for a long time.

I used to love an adventure and I had jobs on magazines (remember magazines?) which provided the opportunity for plenty of them, but when I hit my 30s I started to become increasingly afraid of the world, until I was too frightened to even go outside at all....it was just me, my phone and my social media feeds. Doesn't sound too healthy, does it? It wasn't.

Rob Temple runs a social-media empire from the comfort of his sofa. Living the dream! But what happens when a lack of colleagues, bosses and alarm clocks means that your sofa and the four walls of your very quiet living room become your whole world?

In this hilarious and life-affirming memoir, Rob explores what it will take for him to become a little less Bear (Pooh) and a little bit more Bear (Grylls) and how mild-mannered, anxious rule-followers can get their own share of (gentle) adventure from time to time.

Hilarious and profoundly British

I am an American but lived in the U.K. for many years and have a British husband. It is so accurate that I constantly have to keep stopping the audio because I’m laughing and do not want to miss a line.

Fine

Absolutely fine. I thought about giving it a 5* to make the author feel better if he were to ever read this review, but then I got a bit of anxiety in case someone pressed me on my thoughts and to why I’d given it 5/5.

Honest, heartfelt, funny and revealing read

While reading/listening to this book, it felt like as if I was joining in his adventure with him and it was very much fun.

This book is a very frank account of how he felt during his adventure after(/during) his difficult times.
He expresses his thoughts and feelings (which everyone can relate to in one way or the other) in an honest and touching way but which manages to be both frank and revealing, and witty and charming all at once.

Every sentence stayed in me and made me giggle and laugh with myself all day.
Great narration in comforting/familiar voice.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening(and reading) to it!

Mildly impressed!

This is a good book. It is uncomfortable, funny, sad, witty and soothing. I related to it in a rather worrying way. I'm sure I would've enjoyed this book in its written form as well but Mathew Baynton's voice really was it for me. I cannot say how much I enjoyed his narration, it really brought something special to each chapter. Thank you, I loved it a lot.

Strap in for a mild ride

I admittedly downloaded this for the 'ear candy' provided by the lovely Mat Baynton (I won't be alone in this). I wouldn't describe myself as anxious but could relate to the cringing moments of social awkwardness, perpetual procrastination and chronic introspection that Rob Temple describes with just enough humour to keep them enjoyable and not banal. Not a laugh out loud book for me but a very human journey which, refreshingly, begins and ends in pretty much the same place. This has been a steady companion to me as I work from home. No harrowing drama and a pleasing number of references to familiar East of England (mildest of regions) locations. I disembark from this book (yes at the end) feeling pleasantly entertained and also wondering how Rob is getting on with lockdown. Note to self: I must open a Twitter account.

Wonderfully Relatable

I absolutely loved listening to this book and learning more about Rob Temple, the man behind Very British Problems.

Relatable in so many ways, it reminds us (with a touch of awkward humour) that we are all just human.

I was sad when the book ended. More please!

A deluxe sausage sandwich of a book

Full of laugh out loud moments and touches of poignancy, this is a deluxe sausage sandwich of a book (listen to the Afterword and you will get the analogy) Matthew Baynton's reading is perfection. Enjoy!
