Publisher's Summary

Blackhawk: a wanderer, a man running from a dark and sinister past. A genetically-engineered warrior, a capable and accomplished killer, he is also a lost soul, a man who has fled to the deepest reaches of space seeking his true identity.

The Far Stars: the farthest extent of human habitation in the galaxy, a sector of a hundred inhabited worlds, it is a dangerous expanse full of pirates, mercenaries, and cutthroats. The sector is a rough and rugged frontier, lying beyond the darkness of the great Void, and the only place in all the vastness of space where men live free of the brutal empire that rules the rest of mankind.

Celtiboria: once the premier world in the Far Stars, now a planet wracked by centuries of brutal civil war, driven to the edge of a dark age by the unending struggle among its Warlords for power and control. Augustin Lucerne: one of Celtiboria's feuding Warlords, a brilliant tactician and a respected commander. Lucerne is something rare on Celtiboria, in all of the Far Stars...an honorable man who fights not for personal aggrandizement but to save his world.

One of the BEST Space Operas!

I love this series. This particular book takes us back right after Blackhawk leaves the empire and meets Marshall Lucerne. it specifies exactly how they became friends.

What I am looking forward to is how Blackhawk gets his ship and team together and how he and Lucerne work together to bring the far stars together hopefully in an upcoming book.

Jeffrey Kafer's narration hits it out of the ballpark again.

great story line - but writer needs help

Would you try another book from Jay Allan and/or Jeffrey Kafer?

NO!! too much repeated character detail - over and over and over! Jeffrey Kafer always does a good job.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Blackhawk?

MOST OF IT.... HE HAD A GOOD STORY LINE BUT CHARACTER DETAIL REPEATED OVER, OVER, OVER AND OVER KILLED IT.

Great power fantasy

If you are looking for a science fiction power fantasy (albeit more Mad Max than Star Wars) don't go any further. Jay Allen's Blackhawk is a super human character with just enough flaws to give him interesting limits. While the story pretends to introduce other characters, the speed in which relationships develop is too unrealistic to allow them any depth. Normally this would be it for me, but here it fits the overall pace of the story and the glimpses at the wider world kept me wanting to here more of the universe. If you are not looking for depth but action, it's a fun time.

I CAN ONLY GIVE IT A C- . MAYBE SERIES IMPROVES.

NARRATION WAS GREAT, BUT THIS BOOK IS A SLIGHTLY BELOW AVERAGE READ. ... I LISTENED TO IT AT 21/2 TIMES NORMAL IF THAT IS ANY CLUE TO THE CONTENTS. THE EDITOR SHOULD'VE CUT THE BOOK DOWN, PERHAPS BY HALF.
ITS A YOUNG ADULT COMPLEXITY WITH AN "R" RATED CONTENT.
I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE IT.

Awesome Military Sci-fi!

Jay Allan treats us to fierce battles with evil villains, honorable heroes with flaws as well as virtues, and a couple of characters that fall somewhere in between who earn redemption in the end. He takes us into the noise, pain, fear, and valor in the midst of battle. He shows war for what it is: a dirty, horrifying, mind- and body-scaring clash, in which the combatants fight for varying reasons and often with inner conflicts dogging their steps. In short, the author shows man both at his best and his worst. It’ll make you think about what our own soldiers go through and bring home with them. Hopefully, the reader will come away with a feeling of compassion for what war does to those who fight in it. As for THIS reader, I look forward to Jay Allan’s next book and Blackhawk’s further adventures as he will no doubt continue to strive to become the man he wants to be.

The Beginning?

Although this was meant to be a prequel to the Far Stars series, I listened to Blackhawk when I was two books in to the Far Stars series to get an insight into the man who was Blackhawk and how the relationship between him and General Augustin Lucerne grew, although little is given away about his earlylife. It covers the wars between the different warlords on Celtiboria. Blackhawk, a genetically engineered warrior; a formidable killer, is running from a past he cannot escape. The Far Stars is a haven of some 100 worlds inhabited by mercenaries, pirates and the like and the last place people can live free from the yolk of the Empire, that is until Governor Vos' schemings put everything at risk.

It just left me cold, I didn't warm to the characters. Also it jumped about to much.
Sorry not for me
