About this listen

Better a lifetime on the edge of disaster than an honest day's work.

Chuck Ramsey is a traveling con man fronting as a comedian. After a gig on Earth, he picks Mordecai The Brown, a hitchhiking wizard on the run from his own kind. Chuck's ship, the Radio City, is a Winnebego of the stars, serving as both home and transport as he schemes and scams across the galaxy with his family. The pair form an unlikely bond, and "Mort" becomes a part of that family. The Ramseys, wizard in tow, embark on a journey of criminal hijinks, magical mayhem, and evasion of consequences for both.

They cross paths with wizard-hunters and smuggling kingpins, sheriffs from backwater border planets and underworld syndicates. Between Chuck's silver tongue and Mort's mystical mastery, they manage to get in and out of trouble on planets large and small. Money comes and goes, with the biggest score always the one yet to come. Danger sniffs at their trail wherever they go, but somehow, they find a way to keep going.

Chuck and Mort make many friends in their travels.

They make even more enemies.

And along the way, the two of them inadvertently help raise a boy to become one of the galaxy's unsung heroes.

Mirth & Mayhem is the full book collection of all 16 missions chronicling the adventures of the starship Radio City and the Ramsey family's adventures with houseguest/refugee Mort, along with six short stories.

The series follows a mismatched duo of itinerant comedian and outlaw wizard as they roam the galaxy trying to eke out a living and stay ahead of the consequences of their actions.

Black Ocean: Mirth & Mayhem looks back at an earlier era in the Black Ocean universe, and returning readers will get to see how some of their favorite characters came to be. Fans of morally gray heroes and slick-talking conmen will love this series.

Superb in every way. A pleasure and an adventure. Wonderful story from JS Morin, the start of Mort the Wizard, Brad Ramsey and the Ramsey family's adventures. The scope is amazing, the imagination plausible, the magic intoxicating, the narrative human, (and yes, alien in places), and the laughter is genuine, as are the tears. Mesmerising action shifting from planet to planet, with simply masterful performance(s) from Mikael Naramore. I'd read a series after this, going back to listen again, armed with what I know now. Do yourself a favour, enjoy.

Stunning. So good.

I love scifi and choose books based on their length. This is a great prequel to the series and I highly recommend it

Great narrating, solid story

Advertised as a fun hero coming of age, I was fine with rolling my eyes at the overtly pervy 13yr old. I was NOT prepared for the glorification of him manipulating a “sheltered” 13yr old girl and using a traumatic situation to sleep with her??
And all the adults are perfectly congratulatory; “well she looked more embarrassed to see me than disappointed with your performance, check back in a few months in case she’s preggers haha” so congrats on being a man! What?? They are both VERY underage, and the book makes sure to emphasise this throughout.
I understand underage activity happens, that’s just reality. I get it’s showing the rough upbringing of this kid… but it’s the celebratory nature it is given in the book itself that has me feeling like I’ve stumbled on some sort of pdf flash fic. At no point is it treated with any gravity. Just haha fun fun lets sexualise the minors look at ‘em go! Good on ya, kid! No thank you.

It’s a shame, because the characters and world building are fantastic. But not something I could ever recommend to anyone, simply based on how this is handled in the overall narrative.

Glorifies the sexualisation of minors, wtf?
