Publisher's Summary

Life’s a grind.

Living in a virtual game world sounds like the ultimate dream. Plenty of action, intrigue, and guess who gets to be the big hero?

But what happens when that digital reality gets flipped on its head? Bad guys are after your sweet loot, your fancy title is loaded with unrealistic expectations, and achieving such a high level comes with a big fat target on your back.

It isn’t long before Talon and company learn that, in an MMO, the daily grind is a literal fact of life.

Something has to give, so when a new crusader faction rolls into town, Talon senses an opportunity. Not just to get out of Dodge, but to navigate unforgiving terrain to the edge of the world where he can make a difference. Have a real impact. Be a real hero.

The catch? An awakened dragon, a city of cutthroats, and a mystical executioner with a sharpened axe to grind. Welcome to the first of a few very long days.

Great Followup

This is a great followup to to Reboot. It continues the story pretty much where the other book ended. The writing is solid and the characterizations are realistic and believable. My only real complaint is that the hero goes off on his own a lot more than he should. I missed his doofy brewer roommate and his aggressive pixie gal pal. They were there, but not nearly as much as I would have liked.

Over all, this is shaping up to be a great series.

So much better

Every complaint I had about the first book is fixed this time around. I connected more to the characters and I loved watching the world expand. Once again, the narrator was amazing, and even if you don't pick up this book you should look into other books he's narrated. If you like this kind of book, it's worth the credit.

Wonderfully done

Domino does a wonderful job at right a fantasy tale with elements of modern times lightly mixed in. The progression of the story was steadily paced which kept my attention on it perhaps too well (it's dangerous listening at ten and realizing it's two in the morning "moments" later). I'm looking forward to book 3. :)

Amazing series

Love this series and this book was amazing. Great storyline and character development. Most of the book, i was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out how Talon was going to be able to pull off a win. I hope to see another installment but with how this one ended, it seems to be the last, but it was all tied up nicely so as to not need another.

smart and witty dialouge worth the listening.

Love this series explores some deep issues that you would have if somehow you were a part of a digital reality.

Another great book in the series by Finn.
Well constructed and well written.

James had a great performance and made the story come alive again.

Worth the buy.

Wow this sucked and disappointed...

PLOT:
I mean, hey... If you like to listen to a story where the author cut and pasted the story of Christian Crusades and slapped a LitRPG overlay over top, that's cool... That's the main premise of this sequel. Evil Bishop pretending to be "holy," utilizing the needs of the displaced and impoverished to justify murdering "pagans" who had recently been awakened and given their freedom, all while the developers of the game sit on their hands and act like they can't step in or make changes (eye roll...yeah sure...)

ALL THE BADS:
The real shame of this 2nd installment is the fact that it took 11 hours to go from level 1 - 9, and this time around, another 11 hours to go from level 9 to....level 9....wth? Let's be real...if you're a fan of LitRPG, you like lore, loot, skills, stats, battles, and LEVELS.. You're not gonna justify the lack of character growth by saying ,"it's a beta." The cap is lifted. The entire story fought (barely) against NPC's, therefore resulting in zero character development. Nothing changed. They are literally in the exact same position as the last book left off at. Level 9 with a barely discovered keep, and nothing new to add to the next book.

This sophomoric followup was 10 hours of dialogue, whereby the MC continues to spout off about things we already know. I find it unnecessary that he constantly explains everything,, despite the actions and events in the game already doing that. SOOOOO much dialogue and re-explaining things that have already happened in this book. Not re-explaining things in the 1st book...but in this one. This was by far the slowest LitRPG I've read to date, and my library is over 40+ LitRPG titles. Move the development forward already....The MC is also the most indecisive protagonist ever... Make a decision! If given the choice between water or milk to put in his Fruity Pebbles, he'd be stumped for 4 chapters trying to decide...

Izzy is still a rich, bratty, overpowered developer's daughter, with the strongest artifact in the game, and doesn't even take part in the final battle. She's still annoying and ungrateful, despite only having the staff and cool home because of the MC. And Kyle, as a hilarious blundering idiot frat boy, is by far the best character, with the coolest skills, and stuck in the keep for the entire book? He at one point gets a sniper buff, and the MC wonders if it will help his accuracy when shooting a crossbow. Huh...? Sniper... What did he think would happen from a sniper buff?

Regrettably, if book 3 gets to the halfway point and they're level 10, I'm out...It's frustrating.

Better than the first!

I have this reoccurring nightmare that Domino isn't going to finish the Afterlife Online Seriese. I wake up in cold sweats, wondering whatever happened to Talon, Kyle and Izzy. Did they ever defeat Luc1fer? I don't know, but I love this series!
