About this listen

The vaunted power of the Mage’s College. Unbounded freedom among the Wolfmen. The best of both worlds.

Recent college grad Sam King was hoping for a backpacking trip across Europe as a graduation present. Instead, he’s going to get a different kind of trip: a three-month stint in the ultimate immersive gaming experience. As a lifelong geek, gamer, and outsider, it’s a better gift then he’d ever dreamed.

But when he jumps feetfirst into the world of Eternium, run by CAL (the Certified Altruistic Lexicon), it’s not exactly what he expected. All he wants is to quest, game, grind some levels, and get his hands on awesome loot. You know, have fun! But the Mage’s College seems to have a very different definition of fun - one involving study, blisteringly strict regulations, aristocratic hierarchy, and tons of pay to play.

Sam crosses the college and finds himself running for his life with a back-talking book that is far more than it seems and a class that no one has even heard of. If he can navigate the deadly college politics and the looming war with the barbaric Wolfmen, he might just find the fun and adventure he was looking for.

Don't worry that the dual author will not match up, this is definitely the same strengths as the core series. Looking forward to the next one
Great book

Strong addition to the Series

The characters are enjoyable, the plot progresses well with decent pacing, the writing is solid, and the main character's class is pretty unique. A good first book and I'm excited to read more.

Fun and different

Good book, I loved the way it paralleled and in some ways proceeded the Ritualist. I am a fan of the troll nation series and liked the nods that it got. It's nice to think that the two worlds are somehow linked, with the software compabies mentioned, though I don't remember if they were in the other books.
You can tell the influence that Dakota Krout has had on the book, the way that CAL's system messages are written in matches perfectly with the rest of the series.
The L.A.W. sounds like the ritual the wolfmen were using that joe interupted too.

Only negative was that occasionally the narration would skip sections of the book. Would mostly not have noticed but I was reading along with it and there was also a point where it went from a conversation before they saved Finn right into the middle of a conversation with Finn.

Can't wait to see what the wolf pack will be going on to do next.

Where's the next one

Enjoyed seeing the MC stick up for himself, take risks and embrace challenges on his way to developing a quite unique class. Looking forward to the next book to see where his character build takes him. Read the kindle version and enjoyed the Narration on the audiobook too. The pompous mages are painted in a such a poor light, leaving you itching to see them taken down. I welcomed the different perspective of these characters operating in the completionist chronicles universe. I Powered through the audiobook in a couple of days while I did chores around the house. Highly recommended.

Great start to an intriguing story

You would think that the end point of this book would be the shatter a people final battle.

Think again... rather than juxtapose the main story fight with what happened on the wolfman side and how they delt with the fallout of their own spell backfiring. Its just the origin story or a class which is supposedly on the same level as the archmage's.

The MC really has no distinctive identity other than fighting for the opposite side of the ritualist's storyline. The main villian was terribly executed and was so corny! he basically did the whole evil guy monologue and blew himself up because he was an 'arrogant noble mage' - oh but not before giving his journeyman blueprint to the paper guy.

There is alot of recycling and reusing story elements and game details that have been explained in other books.

The next step was to introduce other races and build up humanities foothold in Ardania. This seems like a step back in storytelling. In my opinion this is the worst book of the completionist series.

I don't know what the book wanted to achieve.
