Publisher's Summary

"His eyes returned to mine, that invisible tether between us strung too tight. That magnetic pull, it was unbreakable, unyielding. Eternal. And it demanded that we collide."

On the secluded continent of Edenvale, possessing magic is a death sentence. Those who have it are labeled Cursed, and by order of the king, they are Cleansed—a horrific event utilizing a hot, hungry pyre and an iron collar. Enemy to the king, a group known as the Cursed rebels defend their lands from his reach, creating an ongoing bloodthirsty war.

When Sage's brother is conscripted for the war, she is forced to trade in her cozy, peaceful cottage life and join the Cursed rebels to get him back. Her mission seems straightforward, but Von, the leader of the Cursed rebels, comes riddled with dark secrets. With his otherworldly eyes, black as a starless night, and a taste for juicy thigh—ahem—red apples, Sage knows better than to get involved with a guy like him. But knowing and doing are two very different things.

Together with the Cursed rebels and Von, the king of inky deals and sexy, stolen moments, Sage embarks on the quest of a lifetime. Little does she know that fate is at work and the gods are watching her every move.

Between Life and Death is for ACOTAR fans looking to scratch that insatiable itch.

I really liked it

To start, the story was really good, I can’t fault the world building or the theology of the story. The characters were robust, though it was hard to get to know them as it was a slow reveal of sorts, Von as a male protagonist came on way too strong to begin with for my liking. They didn’t have to be enemies to lovers or anything, but it was just a bit too dominating for me at the start, I feel they could have built to that.
I really wanted her to find her brother Caleb, but I wasn’t that interested as I didn’t really know him and he seemed like he could look after himself? Maybe he needed to be weaker or younger for it to seem more realistic.
Anyway. I really did like this novel, I will buy and read book 2 when it’s released, I think Jaclyn is a fantastic writer with an excellent imagination so I really look forward to more.
The narrators were a little too on the nose with their intonation and inflection making everything sound a bit superficial or inferencing spicy time, but then during spicy times in the novel they didn’t change up their tone and it was a bit bland, Not the scenes, but the way they spoke them out. Anyway, I do recommend to read/listen to this novel, I am intrigued as to where the world will go from here.

Audio Book for me

Audio Book Review

3.5 stars atm - but after I read book 2 - I may change my mind on my rating.

This book intrigued me from the moment I saw the Author on TT and truly luv her vibe & she wonderfully is getting alot of page turns.

I had started the read and getting to know the characters, as the author built up the storyline and plot a bit too slowly with pacing alot of telling but not showing( stronger beta reader feedback would have mitgated this). So I stopped reading & thought I would wait close to book 2's release and listen to Audio of book 1 and not review this read too early.

Romantasy with much Mystery
I actually liked the FMC she had that curious Nancy Drew detective sleuthing (with a sword) probing vibe asking alot of questions but not ready to form a view yet - that was refreshing for me and not frustrating as others have pointed out. Leans into the lost memories vibes that the reader starts to detect.

This Book is quite a clean tame romantasy but peppered with some dirty mood talking and thoughts but not much"doing" lil robust heavy petting . The Lack of spice doesnt affect the story at all.

Von and Sage have alot of swoony trope checklist being met "that we all love" teasing across the pages - there's nothing wrong with that. Readers do love this book across the world. The book 2 promotions says the spice will deepen. I have no real view on Von until read book 2, I actually thought his sister was more interesting on page villainous with her instant actions showing. Until we got to the last third of book & Von truly started to hold my interest with his role on storyline revealed last line in audio book ch 53....so good - so you do need to hang in there.

But this book does have high calibre effort made with secondary characters that I cannot fault - they really hold the book together well.

Nor can I fault the authors on page expression language.& Everytime the Characters were outside on horses or in battle you could really visualise easily thanks to authors writing. This Author can write wide open spaces and make them very intimate.

I much prefer the audiobook pulling the mood forward of story to rescue caleb her friend as the best part this book is actually is the found family, that is written very strongly.

My only request - Dingle ? can we replace that word asap please.
