Publisher's Summary

A grisly death staged as an accident. Can a hard-nosed copper track a killer as elusive as a shadow?

North Yorkshire, England. Detective Chief Inspector Harry Grimm is reluctantly easing into life in the dales. As he gradually acclimatizes to the slower pace of the countryside while he awaits a return to the city, he’s called out to inspect a farmer’s crushed body. And despite the doctor on site declaring it a tragic mishap, the seasoned police officer rolls up his sleeves when evidence points to foul play.

Frustrated with the lack of witnesses and suspects, Grimm whips his easygoing team into action when a second corpse is found. And with a mysterious clue the only connection and the not-so-quiet village in self-imposed lockdown, the city-bred cop hunts for a link lethal enough to lead to murder….

Can he stop the picturesque countryside from becoming a blood-filled cemetery?

Best Served Cold is the riveting second book in the DCI Harry Grimm crime fiction series. If you like square pegs jammed into round holes, deeply textured plots, and lively local color, then you’ll love David J. Gatward's riveting puzzle.

Great characters

The plot is great, and enjoyed how Grimm is becoming part of the dales and the dales are accepting of him

Very sad at times

Great writing and a marvellous story. Love the narrator Aubrey Parsons. David J Gatwards bit at the end of this book is well worth listening to.

Another gem

GatwRd has written another corker. Harry Grimm of Wensleydale is rapidly becoming one of my new favourite detectives. Do yourself a favour and start the series. You won’t be able to stop

Great new detective stories

Really love the characters and setting for these murder mysteries, they’re well written and entertaining, the characters are really developing well and the sense of community in the dales is beautifully portrayed. I’m getting very fond of everyone, Harry and Jim really stay with you. Wish they were a bit longer I’m listening to them too fast, or perhaps I should stop listening to them so much… but I do like them ☺️

Terribly disappointed by the narration.

I loved the first book in the Harry Grimm series and enjoyed Aubrey Parsons' narration.

But this one is almost unlistenable! Parsons sounds as if he has not quite recovered from a bout of laryngitis and I spent the first chapter just wishing he would bleepingwell clear his throat!

Subsequent chapters were a bit better, but by the end if each one, the narrator was again rasping away. Who records a book with a failing voice!? Heaven only knows what damage he did to his vocal chords.

Doesn’t Live up to the .promise of book 1

I enjoyed book one but book 2 is a let down. Harry’s family dramas burst out early in the book, and then simply disappear. Very unrealistic. Also unrealistic is the plot - just so much that would never happen. I had quite a few eye rolling moments and ultimately decided to give up on the series. Disappointing.
