About this listen

He's the hot, grumpy goalie I had a crush on in high school...and now I'm his live-in assistant.

After my ex crushed my dreams in the music industry, I’m done with getting my heart broken. Working as an assistant for an NHL player was supposed to be a breeze, but nothing about Jamie Streicher is easy. He’s an intimidatingly hot, grouchy jerk who can't stand me. The guy has a massive ego. Keeping things professional will be no problem, even when he demands I move in with him.

Beneath his surliness, though, Jamie’s surprisingly sweet and protective.

When Jamie learns how bad my ex was in bed, his competitive nature flares, and he encourages and spoils me in every way. The creative spark I used to feel about songwriting? It’s back, and I’m writing music again. Between wearing his jersey at games, rowdy parties with the team, and being brave on stage again, I’m falling for him.

He could break my heart, but it might be worth it.

Behind the Net is a grumpy-sunshine pro hockey romance with lots of spice and an HEA. It’s the first book in the Vancouver Storm series, and can be listened to as a stand-alone.

Tropes:

  • grumpy sunshine
  • slow burn
  • boy obsessed
  • pro hockey
  • forced proximity (boss vs. assistant + roommates)
  • spice coaching

The book is a typical romcom. I felt the author could have expanded on scenes to add more depth rather than rush over them. The characters were well developed though. I wasn't an overall fan of the narraters.

3.75/⭐️
I’ve heard so many good things about this series but I was abit hesitant about the first book in the series, I’ve seen a lot of 2-3 star ratings and a lot of people DNFing, but I actually really enjoyed behind the net, yes it was abit cringy, but i enjoyed it. Jaime was everything the perfect demanding, possessive, jealous ass and I loved it!! I fear Jamie is my type to a T 😭 Pippa was so cute, I loved her as a character, she was fun, creative, talented. I enjoyed her relationship with Jamie and how much he encouraged and supported her. The slow burn was deliciously slow, the pining was delicious and I loved their friendships. The side characters I adored, Hayden, Ward, Alexei even Rory ahh can’t wait to read the next book. I also listened to the audiobook narrated in duet style by Tim Paige and Savannah peachwood did a awesome job into bringing Jamie and Pippa to life

I absolutely loved the story and I love the characters. The emotional stuff throughout the book was also excellent and very real with some great subjects that you can relate to in real life. However, I found the X-rated sex scenes excessive and unnecessary. They could’ve been toned back a lot and it still would’ve been a brilliant book. I ended up fast forwarding over those to get back to the brilliant storyline to be honest it’s put me off listening to the next two in the series but I’m going to try because the actual story writing was so good.

I think this would appeal to a much broader listening/reading public if it wasn’t quite so smutty in parts including the way the male narrator spoke it couldn’t have just been his voice. It was offputting because he seemed to be too old and melodramatic for a young character.
However if the explicit sex scenes are your thing then you’ll enjoy the book.

Excellent story

⭐⭐⭐⭐ .5 Loved, would recommend to everyone, only a small issue

This was my first Stephanie Archer book and I am kicking myself for not reading from her sooner. Jamie needs an assistant to help him with his new puppy, cue Pippa. Pippa and Jamie both had crushes on each other in high school but of course neither of them knew. Jamie has returned home to be closer to his mum and Pippa is staying at her sister after a nasty break up. Jamie starts off super grumpy but that doesn't last long. Their romance was so sweet and the spice absolutely delivered just the way that it should. I loved seeing two adults help each other work on their issues together and manage to communicate with no third act break up.

Jamie's main focus is hockey and his mum because he is determined not to have another relationship after his previous relationship crashed and burned. Eventually he realises he is misguided on what his priorities should be and that his relationship didn't end for the reasons he thinks. I loved that he managed to close that chapter in such a healthy way.

Pippa spoke to me on a deep soul level, the daughter that struggles with constant parental guilt because it really is god damn debilitating. She really was so broken by her ex but she let herself finally believe in herself and it was so wholesome. My favourite thing about this book was her relationship with her sister Hazel, it is so refreshing to see positive sister relationships.

Also Daisy the dog gets a whole star on her own because she is the best girl.

Tropes: Sports Romance (hockey), Forced Proximity, Grumpy x Sunshine, Boy Obsessed, Spicy Coach, Nickname (Songbird)
Triggers: toxic ex, miscarriage (past relationship), panic attacks, anxiety, parental guilt.

it wasnt a bad read it just was the same ole fluffy romcom. i personally thought both narrators sounded robotic, particularly the mmc so it turned me off a fair bit. the story was okay, a bit rushed but if youre looking for something you dont have to thibk too much about this book is for you.

Nothing bad about this one, but nothing outstanding either. Heard it all before and not sure I’d listen to the next one.
