About this listen
He's the hot, grumpy goalie I had a crush on in high school...and now I'm his live-in assistant.
After my ex crushed my dreams in the music industry, I’m done with getting my heart broken. Working as an assistant for an NHL player was supposed to be a breeze, but nothing about Jamie Streicher is easy. He’s an intimidatingly hot, grouchy jerk who can't stand me. The guy has a massive ego. Keeping things professional will be no problem, even when he demands I move in with him.
Beneath his surliness, though, Jamie’s surprisingly sweet and protective.
When Jamie learns how bad my ex was in bed, his competitive nature flares, and he encourages and spoils me in every way. The creative spark I used to feel about songwriting? It’s back, and I’m writing music again. Between wearing his jersey at games, rowdy parties with the team, and being brave on stage again, I’m falling for him.
He could break my heart, but it might be worth it.
Behind the Net is a grumpy-sunshine pro hockey romance with lots of spice and an HEA. It’s the first book in the Vancouver Storm series, and can be listened to as a stand-alone.
Tropes:
- grumpy sunshine
- slow burn
- boy obsessed
- pro hockey
- forced proximity (boss vs. assistant + roommates)
- spice coaching

This was my first Stephanie Archer book and I am kicking myself for not reading from her sooner. Jamie needs an assistant to help him with his new puppy, cue Pippa. Pippa and Jamie both had crushes on each other in high school but of course neither of them knew. Jamie has returned home to be closer to his mum and Pippa is staying at her sister after a nasty break up. Jamie starts off super grumpy but that doesn't last long. Their romance was so sweet and the spice absolutely delivered just the way that it should. I loved seeing two adults help each other work on their issues together and manage to communicate with no third act break up.
Jamie's main focus is hockey and his mum because he is determined not to have another relationship after his previous relationship crashed and burned. Eventually he realises he is misguided on what his priorities should be and that his relationship didn't end for the reasons he thinks. I loved that he managed to close that chapter in such a healthy way.
Pippa spoke to me on a deep soul level, the daughter that struggles with constant parental guilt because it really is god damn debilitating. She really was so broken by her ex but she let herself finally believe in herself and it was so wholesome. My favourite thing about this book was her relationship with her sister Hazel, it is so refreshing to see positive sister relationships.
Also Daisy the dog gets a whole star on her own because she is the best girl.
Tropes: Sports Romance (hockey), Forced Proximity, Grumpy x Sunshine, Boy Obsessed, Spicy Coach, Nickname (Songbird)
Triggers: toxic ex, miscarriage (past relationship), panic attacks, anxiety, parental guilt.

A classic romance with tasteful adult scenes. A slower burn which I enjoy. The main characters development was enjoyable to listen to and there were some side characters which I got invested in as well.
I feel it was well written and the voice performers were both excellent.
An Enjoyable Listen
