Publisher's Summary

Beard With Me is the origin story of Billy Winston and Scarlet St. Claire (aka Claire McClure) and is just the beginning of their epic love story.

No one is better at surviving than Scarlet St. Claire and making the best out of circumstances beyond her control is Scarlet’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, she’d be the last person on earth, hermitting like a pro, singing along to her CD Walkman, and dancing like no one is watching.

Scarlet is clever, Scarlet is careful, and Scarlet is smart...except when it comes to Billy Winston.

No one is better at fighting than Billy Winston and raging against his circumstances - because nothing is beyond his control - is Billy’s specialty.

In an apocalyptic situation, he’d be the first person on earth to lead others to safety, overcome catastrophe, or die trying.

Billy is fearless, Billy is disciplined, and Billy is honorable...except when it comes to Scarlet St. Claire.

Beard With Me

I am a little confused, I get why we needed the back story to piece together all the puzzle pieces but I kept waiting for the present to come. Did I miss something? Will we have to wait forever for the HEA? I mean don’t get me wrong this was a romance (no sex) and that is ok because HELLO she was 14 and he was 16 so I get it. But it doesn’t really leave us with a HEA. Or any real closure. Maybe we will get it in the next book. I don’t know sigh. I loved the narration, but again these guys are in their teens so it was a little odd for us to have the same narrator who is supposed to be in their 30’s in the other books.

WARNING CLIFFHANGER AHEAD

I love Penny Reid and all her books, but be warned- this is her first cliffhanger. I hate cliffhangers. Why would she do this to us? Good story. But baaaad cliffhanger. I wish had waited to get it until the second part is available.

You can easily skip this one

I'm a huge Penny Reid fan, but this one didn't work for me. I think it could have been condensed into a prologue for the next book. It really drags and the pacing is off with the majority of the book taking place in the last 2 hours. There's also a real creepiness factor with both Ben and Billy being significantly older than Scarlett.

Love the whole Series...

I've been waiting for this book and it didn't disappoint. I just wish it weren't a cliffhanger. I HATE CLIFFHANGERS!!!! But thank goodness the next book is available or I would have gone absolutely batty. :-)

Should Have Been Book 4.5 Or Something

I have mixed feelings about this book. While this story was highly anticipated, as I have listened to this series from the beginning, I so wanted this story a few books ago. Although this is book is about Billy and Claire, it’s the back story on where the animosity between Billy and Claire began. I’ve always wanted to know what happened between those two, I also wanted their story set in the present. I was so tempted to skip this half way through and go right to the next book (also about them but set in the present). Oh Cletus you were a joy even as a kid. I now know why Cletus has been plotting against the bikers since he was a teen. The epilogue....I don’t remember them speaking of this in past books. Wow! Glad I didn’t skip ahead. I understand Billy more and even Billy’s reasons for not fully forgiving Jethro, who was like his best friend until he joined their fathers gang. Now I’m trying to remember when Jethro was welcomed back into the fold (as told in previous books). Should I re-listen to everything before the next book or just listen to the next, then go back. Even though I wished this book came earlier in the series, I say don’t skip it. If their backstory and HEA was all in one book, I think it would have been rushed. I’ve just waited so long for Billy to be happy, I’m a little impatient for it to happen. C’mon Cletus, make it happen!

Brilliant

How could you not love this series? It's so brilliant, witty, relatable and poignant. The Author is, well a genius but the narrators also brought the characters to life, like they lived through the characters.

Need to download the sequel NOW!

Oh Good Grief. Thank heavens I’m reading this book in October 2020 and don’t have to wait for book 7 to be written. The wait would be excruciating. Downloading Billy’s tale ASAP. Thank you Penny Reid for these fabulous characters.

Beginnings can be bittersweet.if you are reading the Winston brothers series, don’t skip this book!

Clair aka Scarlet was the daughter of a motorcycle king, due to his brutality she became a fairy. She lived in a camp in the forest where she and a handsome boy from the property fell in love, then evil pulled them apart again. The fairy went into hiding and the the bikers almost beat the young man to death to keep her safe. Real love never dies or fades away. Now there is a cabin where the fairy camped, built by the young man. How long can true love go on unrequited, are there kisses in the wind? Is there fairy dust at the campsite cabin sprinkled by the young mans brother? This story has joy and pain, gripping its reader.

Much more serious than the other books

I loved this one. so much more serious than the books in the series. The beard series has been very entertaining albeit less comedic than the Neanderthal series but I am loving this.

loved getting backstory on Billy & Claire

Lengthy explanation of how Billy & Claire found & lost each other as teens. Also, fills in what went down between Jethro & Billy.

Penny Reid at her best

This book is really only suitable for a reader familar with the previous books in this series. And I have to admit it takes a very special writer to be able to write a book such as this, which is essentially a prologue, and yet have enough fans willing to read a book that can only be understood in context with the rest of the series. I do believe that Penny Reid's books are best enjoyed on Audible and in this case the narration is perfect and adds so much to the understanding of the characters. Like many readers in this series I have been curious about the early years of the Winston Brothers and it was much more brutal than I expected. This prologue is really heartbreaking, with the last few chapters being particularly difficult to listen to. However it is also completely addictive and I look forward to the next, and final, book in this wonderful series.

Loved this - part 1 of their story

This story is all about how their relationship developed when they were younger, and the next book will be when they’re older. We’ve got to know the characters in the earlier books in the series, but I absolutely loved getting absorbed and getting to know them in their early years. I didn’t realise this was a two-part story when I got it, but it left me more excited than frustrated. Penny Reid is back! I’ve always loved this author, but the last couple of books have lacked something - but this one was back up to the great standard she’s known for. She’s so good at writing characters that feel so real. Really looking forward to the next book.
