Publisher's Summary

This war was inevitable.

After two brutal, bloody struggles for their very existence against implacable alien foes, humanity is victorious, but not at peace.

As distrust and accusations consume the political discourse between the two major factions, the Eastern Star Alliance military has already begun executing small raiding missions into United Terran Federation space. The Federation fleet, still reeling from the last war, is in no shape to try and protect its own borders.

Now, as diplomacy crumbles and tensions escalate, the ESA has moved into a Federation star system and declared it for themselves. Desperate, the Federation deploys a full task force commanded by Admiral Jackson Wolfe to try and defuse the situation, hoping his reputation forces calmer heads to prevail. Wolfe knows that even if he can stop the ESA here, the die has been cast. Humanity's march to war with itself cannot be stopped.

Battleground is the first book in the final trilogy of the Black Fleet Saga.

Very engagingly enjoyable

This is an excellent reading! Very good narration.
Though some aspects are predictable, the story flows well with tangible points to identify with.

Amazing!

This book had more layers and a deeper story than previous Black Fleet novels. I can tell there's lots more coming with the seeds planted in this book. i really enjoyed this one!

Good, but not for everyone

The book was well written, and the narrator has a great voice and reads well. I really wanted to like this book because I love starship military sci-fi. Yet, this was too heavy on the politics building and too large in the cast of characters. At times I wished I had a flow chart to keep track of who was who as the story was told from several perspectives. The action was limited by a lot of discussion by a lot of characters about what happened and what they think might happen. Now, I don't like to bad mouth a book, especially when the writer clearly worked very hard to create a very deep and detailed story. So, If you like books that have multiple key characters, conspiracies, political backstabbing, and a lot of analytical discussions, then I'm sure you will love this book. If not, then it may not be for you.

I was hoping for another story

The last book (Destroyer) ended with contact of the race how build the Phage had an interest of Jackson Wolfe. I was hoping for a storyline about that. And thought this story to be strange after the alien wars the humans have fought they shouldn't be going to war with the different human factions at once as they did.

Another Great Story

I got lucky when I got the first Black Fleet novel and was immediately interested in what else this author had to offer. I have read and listened to so many books at this point in my life, that I’d like to think I can tell the difference between good writers and bad writers. Joshua Dalzelle does for science fiction what Bernard Cornwell does with historical fiction. While some of the story can be a bit predictable, it doesn’t matter as he creates a compelling universe and wonderful characters that you begin to truly root for and feel for throughout. I wish that there could be Jackson Wolfe books coming for years to come, but understand that isn’t possible. Luckily Omega Force is there and will continue as well as the new Terran Scout Fleet books. If you enjoy sci-fi I highly recommend you look at all of Dalzelle’s work as he is consistent beyond measure.

Joshua Dalzelle NAILS IT!

I truly enjoyed this book. It has flavorful brass humorous dialogue and it is realistic and believable! It has a very similar vibe to Craig Alanson books. I have bought the entire series and this is the best one out of all his other books in this series.

success again!

Joshua you're amazing because in all your literary works we've been completely entertained 100%. As readers across the genre's it is rare to find entire series without a dud or two. not you! Looking forward to what ever hits the pavement next! Amy and Bill Meighan

Good but could have been great

Good book. I enjoy the series. I just didn’t get the sense of suspense and anticipation present in previous books. That being said the set up for the next book leads me to believe that won’t be an issue next time.
Overall well done.

Great Space Opera

I found this a fun listen from start to finish. Very consistent physics, realistic space battles, and good political intrigue. The characters are a little formulaic but hey, it's space opera, it's part if the genre.

Very good but ...

for those not familiar with all the cast of characters, they would benefit from listening to the Expansion Wars and Black Fleet trilogies where Joshua Dalzelle first introduced all of these characters. Even so, enough time had passed that it took a long while before I recalled each of the significant players roles in past series. After that, people, factions and past history and exploits fell into place and I found myself settling in to another nail-biting and anticipatory listening mode. There was significantly more intrigue and enemy infiltration in this book than I recall from earlier ones and I was disappointed that there was not a clear explanation on how that was accomplished. Furthermore, there was a seemingly obvious undiscovered traitor left in a pivotal role in the aftermath. It was so obvious that unless this person/entity had some mind control tricks up its sleeve to throw others off suspicions then this seems like a glaring shortcoming in the storyline.

Mark Boyett's performance continues to make for an excellent listening pleasure.

Nice dirty sci fi, struggling to be as interested in book 7

This book is just as well written as the first. The character development is there better than some other military sci fi but I’m struggling to be as interested in book 7. But then again I’ve steamed through then in less than 8 weeks.

Follows the character Capt Wolf. same old faces lurk as well.

I have been waiting for this book.

I greatly enjoy the previous two trillogies and have been waiting for the first of the next one with great anticipation. The added Miss Marple thread was most enjoyable and then went nowhere. Or, I hope, to the start of book 2. I wouldn't trust Lt Trapp as far as I could throw her underwear.
