Publisher's Summary

This war was inevitable.

After two brutal, bloody struggles for their very existence against implacable alien foes, humanity is victorious, but not at peace.

As distrust and accusations consume the political discourse between the two major factions, the Eastern Star Alliance military has already begun executing small raiding missions into United Terran Federation space. The Federation fleet, still reeling from the last war, is in no shape to try and protect its own borders.

Now, as diplomacy crumbles and tensions escalate, the ESA has moved into a Federation star system and declared it for themselves. Desperate, the Federation deploys a full task force commanded by Admiral Jackson Wolfe to try and defuse the situation, hoping his reputation forces calmer heads to prevail. Wolfe knows that even if he can stop the ESA here, the die has been cast. Humanity's march to war with itself cannot be stopped.

Battleground is the first book in the final trilogy of the Black Fleet Saga.

Amazing!

This book had more layers and a deeper story than previous Black Fleet novels. I can tell there's lots more coming with the seeds planted in this book. i really enjoyed this one!

Boring. Horrible!

Most boring book I've ever read, and I've read over 5,000. There is NOT 1 joke in the book. It's a great book if you want one to put you to sleep or into a coma.

The first real shooting space war does not start until you are 6 hours into the book. 80% of the words are worthless verbose rambling and mostly bureaucratic BS talk.

I cannot believe this book is ranked so high. I'd give it 0 stars if I could.

The narrator's normal voice is fine and quite boring. But his fake voices are horrible.

I was forced to give up on this monstrosity 3 hours before it would be finished. It was draining the life out of me like I had the Covid virus while in ICU.

Good, but not for everyone

The book was well written, and the narrator has a great voice and reads well. I really wanted to like this book because I love starship military sci-fi. Yet, this was too heavy on the politics building and too large in the cast of characters. At times I wished I had a flow chart to keep track of who was who as the story was told from several perspectives. The action was limited by a lot of discussion by a lot of characters about what happened and what they think might happen. Now, I don't like to bad mouth a book, especially when the writer clearly worked very hard to create a very deep and detailed story. So, If you like books that have multiple key characters, conspiracies, political backstabbing, and a lot of analytical discussions, then I'm sure you will love this book. If not, then it may not be for you.

I was hoping for another story

The last book (Destroyer) ended with contact of the race how build the Phage had an interest of Jackson Wolfe. I was hoping for a storyline about that. And thought this story to be strange after the alien wars the humans have fought they shouldn't be going to war with the different human factions at once as they did.

Joshua Dalzelle NAILS IT!

I truly enjoyed this book. It has flavorful brass humorous dialogue and it is realistic and believable! It has a very similar vibe to Craig Alanson books. I have bought the entire series and this is the best one out of all his other books in this series.

Story is ok

It just didn’t grab me, although I was able to finish it. It’s a space opera I heard on the coding credits, so maybe that’s just not for me? I’d listen to something else I stead of this.

Must Have.

Honestly must listen to the first 6 books before getting to this one, action is much later but it tries to tie up many lose ends from the previous books, well character bulding and suspense as the protagonist builds up.

Nice dirty sci fi, struggling to be as interested in book 7

This book is just as well written as the first. The character development is there better than some other military sci fi but I’m struggling to be as interested in book 7. But then again I’ve steamed through then in less than 8 weeks.

Great Book.. nice page turner and well narrated.

Follows the character Capt Wolf. same old faces lurk as well.
Another good book, first half is a slow burner, second half is very action oriented.
if you liked the previous trilogy with the good captain, you will like this

narrator mark Boyett is super good telling the story as well...

Bravo!

I've loved all the series and I can't consume this quick enough. There was a slickness to this that's upped the game.

Keep up the sensational work Sir.

I have been waiting for this book.

I greatly enjoy the previous two trillogies and have been waiting for the first of the next one with great anticipation. The added Miss Marple thread was most enjoyable and then went nowhere. Or, I hope, to the start of book 2. I wouldn't trust Lt Trapp as far as I could throw her underwear.
