Publisher's Summary

The world is falling to the burning shadow of the Possessed and only the power of a battle mage can save it. But the ancient bond with dragonkind is failing. Of those that answer a summoning too many are black. Black dragons are the enemy of humankind. Black dragons are mad.

Falco Dante is a weakling in a world of warriors, but worse than this, he is the son of a madman. Driven by grief, Falco makes a decision that will drive him to the brink of despair. As he tries to come to terms with his actions Falco follows his friends to the Academy of War, an elite training school dedicated to martial excellence. But while his friends make progress he struggles to overcome his doubts and insecurity. Even Queen Catherine of Wrath has her doubts about Falco's training.

While the Queen tries to unite the Kingdoms against the Possessed, Falco struggles to overcome his fears. Will he unlock the power trapped inside him or will he succumb to madness and murder like his father?

So Much Potential...

I'll start of by saying that - on the whole - I loved the story. There are many cool ideas and at least most of them are explored. I liked the whole arc of the main character's power.

However, there is so much wrong with this book and - for me - it's all in the relatively small details.

The narrator will often pronounce words incorrectly or inconsistently, names being chief among such offences. The yelling sounds like they're trying to imitate a yell while also trying to be quiet which is off-putting. And so on.

The story has many issues, too.

Being at "...the end of their rope..." whether it be physical strength failing, mental fortitude breaking, or anything like that seems to stretch on to the point where you don't take it seriously when "< X thing > is about to/beginning to fail".

Inconsistencies such as magic breaking stone that can't be broken by magic or how quickly and intensly the fear generated by the presence of a demon bug the hell out of me, the later being a big thing with regards to plot armour and plot devices.

I could write an essay on everything wrong with the story, but I won't. I will, however, finish on this particular point by saying this story could have been stretched out and explored more in depth such that it could have made an awesome trilogy, but that is sadly not the case.

Then there's the blatant use of real-world languages. it breaks immersion so much when they flat out use German or French and the only change they make is calling the language a different name. It would have been infinitely better if they'd even just bastardised the words they'd used to make it different enough from the languages the author wanted to use. The use of accents, however, was good but not enough to compensate for the language issue.

I also feel the magic could have harder and clear lines drawn suxh that the differentiation between the Magi and the Battlemages was clearer.

There were also a lot of things throughout the book that could have been more satisfyingly dealt with that didn't require much but were still lacking.

Overall, the book is a decent listen and worth listening too, but I can't honestly recommend this book if that makes sense. I just wish the author had done better across the board, and that the narrator had actually pronounced everything correctly or at least consistently as well as not sounding like he's whispering when "yelling".

Pure fantasy

It’s great to listen to a well written book that builds all the leading characters and stands alone without the need to stretch into a trilogy or more. Well done!

Great book, horrible performance

Great story and well written for the most part. Fight sequences started getting repetitive and predictable however. Narrator mispronounced words, changed characters voices halfway through, butchered the women’s voices and all round bad performance

Grim Dark Dragons

Slow start, but builds up the world and characters well to a satisfying conclusion. This is a dark fantasy world where humanity is losing a war against hell. A great one shot in a world full of epic high fantasy trilogies.

zero to hero

A story about a sick and weakly boy that over came the odds and became the hero that no one but his best friend thought that he could be.
I laughed, cried and cheered for joy countless times.
the book doesn't just follow the story of the main character but of the side characters and their adventures which helps to futher immerse you in the world and allows you to experience the story from multiple perspectives.
i can't wait to listen to this epic again!!

Enthralling

Little slow to start, but once you’re into it, you can’t put this down. I found an emotional rollercoaster. Very enjoyable.
