comfortable listening

This is my favorite of the Chronicles of Barsetshire. If someone had told me six months ago that I'd ever even pick up a Trollope novel, I would have needed smelling salts. After recently coming across the very clever Trollope Society web site, I thought there must be some merit to the man's works and downloaded The Warden. I enjoyed every book in the series. There's no Dickenesque social problem exposition, but clever observations on human nature, some nice Victorian prose, lots of opportunity to "read between the lines," and for a Victorian man, some protofeminist ideas (but, unfortunately, he wasn't above his era's racism). I still don't think I would "read" Trollope, but I will listen to everything Audible offers for download. (very good narration though the entire series, too)

Trollope packs a wallop

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Trollope is really the perfect novelist for audio books -- graceful, leisurely, comic, and human. Such a pleasure to float in his world.

What other book might you compare Barchester Towers to and why?

Dickens

Good book

Anthony Trollope's view on human nature is as relevant as it was when he first wrote this novel.

A straightforward reading

The title isn't meant to be faint praise. This is a huge improvement on Simon Vance's eccentric reading. This is one of Trollope's easier to listen to books. His mannerisms and repetitions can wear, even though his characters live. They especially live in this book when it's read properly, as it is here

Life without Obadiah Slope...

...would be intolerable! One of the great comic masterpieces of English literature, superbly narrated. Audio book at its best.
