About this listen

Exclusively from Audible

Doctor Thorne is the third audiobook in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes and Greshambury estate. Despite the promptings of his family to consider a Miss Dunstable, heiress to a fortune, Frank's affections persist, and the humane Doctor Thorne, as Mary's protector, must confront the prejudices of the mid-Victorian society.

Timothy West's narration enhances all the wit and satire that one expects from Trollope. Full of snobbery and hypocrisy, it is a social comedy full of some of Trollope's most brilliant characters.

Critic Reviews

" Doctor Thorne is engaging, witty, profoundly moving, and full of emotional strands that seem as relevant today as when it was written. I love it." (Julian Fellowes)

Generally a good yarn with the author colourfully describing life in "grandeous" society where status is historic..

Trollope At Gossiping Best..

Love the narration of this. Brings out all the humour and character that make Trollope's novels such classics

Brilliant narrator

Timothy West did a great job, he reads beautifully. It’s a long digressive story centring around Dr Thorne and his niece Mary. There’s a mystery about her birth and circumstances but she has been raised with the young ladies of the aristocratic Gresham family and treated like one of their own. When young Frank, the perfect son turns 21, he announces that he wants to marry Mary, but she is penniless and the family turns against her. They desperately need money for Gresham senior’s debts. There’s a sub plot about rough diamond Sir Roger Scatcherd, who went from stonemason to government contractor and was knighted for his services. He’s too fond of the brandy and has a wastrel, drunkard of a son. So much to enjoy and a satisfactory and happy ending which illustrates the hypocrisy of the ruling classes and the fact that money makes one acceptable.

Great narration, engaging characters

Gotta love Anthony Trollope!

I enjoyed the first two novels in the series, but this one is in a different class. The richness of the characters, the intricacies of how he unwinds the storyline, the narrator’s conversational tone and occasional breaking of the fourth wall. Love it all. And so funny! Timothy West likewise shines even more as the narrator, bringing the story truly to life.

Better than Dickens

Absolutely awesome narration of a well written humorous story. I would highly recommend. My only 'complaint' is occasionally the narrator's volume would become faint even though I had the volume at a reasonable level.

Thoroughly enjoyable tale

This was a delightful listen. Timothy West is one of the best narrators I have ever heard and Trollope's Barchester Chronicles are a delight. Off to download the next one!

West is a genius - especially with Trollope

Another brilliant performance by the wonderful Anthony Trollope. My latest favourite heroine Mary Thorne and hero Dr Thorne. Forever with me

Utterly Delectable

Engaging characters, wry humour, family drama and a Cinderella story - what’s not to love? Anthony Trollope is a keen observer of the human condition and although his characters are somewhat flawed he helps us to love and forgive ( most) of them

A fabulous classic
