Publisher's Summary

Trapped in the form of the knight who supposedly slew him, the dragon Tzavalantsaval - with a loathsome goblin steward as his only true ally - struggles to navigate the Kirresci royal court and humanity itself, even as politics and intrigues he scarcely understands push the southern kingdoms ever nearer to open war.

3 hours to the end and still not engaged

Prose was good, narrator excellent, characters were interesting but I am bored to tears. Nothing connected in the plot.

A story of a dragon being slowly humanized

Typically, fantasies involving dragons are not my preference but I decided to give this a try based on the many positive reviews. I discovered the reviews spot on and this was a dragon tail (tail, tale, get it?) of a different breed. Ari Marmell's story premise of having a dragon forced to take the form of a human in order to save his life was masterful. Adding a cold-blooded goblin as his faithful but sarcastic sidekick only added to the storytelling.

If you enjoy court intrigue and multi-layered subterfuge from both the protagonist and antagonists factions, the book has it all. I also found Tzavalantsaval brutal and insensitive nature morphing the longer he remained in human form craftily done.

There did seem to be a bit of LGBTQ and trans influence with several of the primary characters but was subtly written in such a way as to not make it a major theme of the novel.

Ralph Lister's narration was performed well except when he slipped into gravelly-voice mode with Tzavalantsaval and Smim where it often became hard to understand.

An entertaining book and worth the purchase.

Unique and very entertaining!

Well told and unique story. Enjoyed the main character very much, and seeing how “he” changed as the story progressed.
The narrator did a wonderful job. I had no trouble following along and telling the different characters apart. He made it easy to get immersed in the tale.
The only reason the story itself did not get 5 stars, is my dislike for including the antagonist point of view. I prefer to learn along with the protagonist what the villains are planning.

Better than excellent

This book was better than I expected, I was really surprised. The story was well put together. It has a bit of everything. I think it's worth a try for any adventure.

The best I read of fantasy books.

I was really surprised. The book only had 6 reviews. It was only $2. But this book has to be the best I read. I am hard on authors but this one the best I read. Why because authors tend to be too dramatic and talk about senseless stuff during battle. For example the cut ofher breast or how his eyes made him look so handsome. There was none of that here. This book made of the character make sense. Everybody did what they where suppose to. Not that the MC didn't make mistakes but it made sense. He didn't suddenly get smarter or dumber to just continue the story. I believe this book was better then alil hate and I loved that story

Saga of blood and guts

Here is a saga of a hero's journey. It does not end with this book but does have a satisfying conclusion. There are lots of weapons and descriptions of maneuvers, detailing fighting colored with lots of blood and guts. Bound to be a favorite for the fans of goblins, giants, trolls, dragons and knights in gleaming armor. Fans of pretty elves will be displeased. There is even an amusing plot twist at the end. I can imagine the fan art opportunities.

Pluses: It does have character development. It does have an interesting and complex plot. The reader does discern between voices.

Miniuses: The reader's voice ranges from gruff to painful. Really I'm worried that he has damaged his voice. The women all sound like English high born spinsters.
