About this listen

In 2025, the moon hatched and its child died. Things have since gotten worse.

Some people have superpowers now, but so do the extradimensional invaders slowly wiping humanity out. By Julietta's eighteenth birthday, the war has been loss after loss for far longer than she's been alive, so she can't bring herself to be terribly shocked when the sky splits in half and weeps death. Surviving is the real surprise.

Unexpectedly gaining the powers of a shapeshifter, Julietta can change into any living thing she has touched, mixing and matching parts with flesh as mutable as flowing water... Except when she tries to return to her original form. Trapped behind enemy lines in someone else's skin, Julietta must adapt to new powers, new bodies, and new threats, all just to survive. But when she makes it out, will she still be Julietta?

Hi, just finished listening this on the back of MGMH Volume 1 (and an entire re-read of Vigor Mortis). This story was a beautiful narrative about found family, guessing about what makes you human, and eldritch horror. Of the many books written by Natalie Maher I've listened too, I've found myself enjoying a MC with competent social skills. Julietta's thought process and logic as she calmly psychoanalyses the people around her is incredibly entertaining. The entire book is written solely from her perspective, and it feels highly intentional. My only hope is we're one day able to step into the perspective of one of the other characters to get a better picture of who she is, and how real her theories about them are. Though I'd be just as glad to try and put the pieces together along side her as the uncertainty makes this story much different from other Natalie Maher titles (in a good way).

Sarah Beth Pfeifer does an extremely good job at blending character voices together for Jullietta and the various people she impersonates. Somehow balancing character voice and 'character voice' to create distinct character that both may be talking in the same conversation, using the same vocal cords... I'm not sure how you did it, but damn was it impressive.
Like my previous review on MGMH, I hope to read the next installment of this book whenever it might come out.

Nobody makes being an inhuman eldritch monster seem quite as severely cool as Natalie Maher does. The characters are all deeply flawed individuals in need of a great deal of therapy which they are unlikely to receive,

One of my absolute favourites.

You know when you find a Dimond in the rough? Something that you think looks cool and when you start reading you’re just fully blown away? Well that was this book. Everything from the way it tackles disabilities, dysphoria, euphoria it’s all so interesting and when you realise how dystopian it actually is. It’s hauntingly scary, yet extremely comforting to see Julieta struggle with herself after being given supernatural abilities. It’s a great read and the first person view helps you really get into the head of the protagonist!

it is one thing to have an identity crisis as part of the story, it is another for it to be brought up ever 10s. it just gets old fast.

self pity gets old
