About this listen

It is ever the nature of war to continue getting worse. The war Julietta remains stuck in is no exception.

Though more and more threats start showing glimpses of themselves behind the scenes, Julietta can't deal with them while she's busy with boot camp. Even so-called superheroes need to learn how to shoot a rifle and work with a team, but the length and brutality of the war have not been kind to the training camps. Worse, after she graduates, Julietta will be thrust immediately into battle. The colony currently occupying St. Louis has been chosen as the Army's next target, but as Julietta learns more of the alien language, she starts to have many questions about the true nature of this war.

Julietta needs to survive. She needs her family to survive. But which group is actually more of a danger to her: the alien invaders... or humanity itself?

There’s a lot that happened in this book- in all of the books written by Nathalie because gal knows how to pack it to the max with lots of interesting things. It feels like the boys in some way with the whole government being evil af and the fact they conscript kids and teenagers who have superpowers to fight aliens that they cannot communicate with while also controlling the image of them is just wild. Like them calling a person who has mental breakdowns Breakdown because it’s in her powers to break down matter into its singular parts. Made me think absolutely the USA would do that and idk if I’m more saddened or scared by that particular satire. Julieta is a bad ass, but a flawed bad ass. Though her connecting with her god of possibility and those chosen by possibility was a welcome change, even if the writing style gets a bit messy because of how the aliens talk. The fact the characters are teaching a 9 year old about politics through avatar the last air bender is both hilarious and horrifying, because education isn’t a thing when you’re a child soldier. The body horror stuff is on full blast here, and while it’s not as saddening as what I’ve read of Natalie’s works before, it’s still pretty messed up in the most interesting ways possible.

What a dark comedy
