Emotionally complex, flawed but compelling characters, deals with dark themes without getting lost in some hopelessly dramatic grimdark space where everyone and everything in the world is cartoonishly evil or depressing. A compelling neurodivergent (anti)hero dealing with grief, chronic pain, and managing a mood disorder who thinks and acts in shades of grey while still consistently and unflinchingly falling on the side of good every time. Excellent in more ways than can be easily put into words. A great start to an epic fantasy adventure featuring complex but strong morals, well constructed characters with depth and growth, lovingly crafted worldbuilding with pop and gaming culture roots and references, and smoothly integrated litRPG elements where the important parts are highlighted during the action and the extra crunchy stats and details are conveniently slotted into between-chapter interludes so you can choose your preferred level of mechanics crunch. Narration is also outstanding. This book makes it into my top favourites and I can’t wait to see where the next book in the series takes me.
