Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of ancient Japan, then pay attention....

All in all, Japan seems to be a country of paradoxes and oppositions, of yin and yang.

Yet it doesn’t seem to suffer from it; instead, it is thriving, growing, and developing, and it has been doing so for a long time. From those contradictions, a sense of unity and pride arose, guiding Japanese history and civilizational development through the ages, leaving an unquestionable mark on the world heritage and mankind.

But this is only the surface of an astonishing culture that deserves a deeper look. This audiobook will lead you into that dive, showing how those characteristics synonymous with the Japanese civilization gradually appeared, formed, and transformed through time.

Learning about Japan’s history, its past failures and successes and how they shaped their nation, will also illuminate how this civilization developed, while at the same time presenting a full array of interesting stories, persons, and events.

In Ancient Japan: A Captivating Guide to the Ancient History of Japan, Their Ancient Civilization, and Japanese Culture, Including Stories of the Samurai, you will discover topics such as

  • Origins of imperial Japan and its people
  • Birth of imperial Japan and its culture
  • History of classical Japan
  • Early medieval Japan
  • Late medieval Japan
  • Japanese society
  • Warriors of ancient Japan

Great for the history, but...

I've tried to hang in and finish this book but the narration ruins it. After hearing the Japanese language butchered over and over I have given up. Pronouncing a name two different ways in the same paragraph is unacceptable. Reading Japanese Romanji is simple, getting through to the end of the book isn't.

Terrible

Monotone narrated. Levels of detail I don't think anyone really cares about. Do not buy

Five Stars

When I first became interested in the history of Japan, this is the first book that I read. At the time, I gave this book five stars. As I have read more about Japan though this book falls a little bit for the things it leaves out and the fact that it focuses too much attention to relatively obscure cultural phenomena without expending equal energy to political and military development. I would recommend this book for a good start to learning about ancient Japan.

Flat Narration. Brief Historical Overview

This was a great overview of Japanese history. It's concise, a great starting point. For an informational audiobook the narration was too flat with repetitive, almost hypnotic cadence. It's great for falling asleep to, but not the best for keeping one's attention. for my purposes, if it takes a lot of focus to listen to and understand, then it defeats the purpose of an audiobook as I could probably just read it myself faster and with better comprehension. It may suit other's purposes, however. Luckily it's not a long book, so it's tolerable.

Overall Good

This book makes an excellent introduction to Japanese history, as it covers the whole spectrum of history and does not focus in on one part too much. My only problems are that it doesn't seem to go in-depth in Buddhism enough and it seems to move past the civil war in the 16th century too quickly.

Covers Everything

This is a great short history if you want to learn the basics. A bit dense, but it covers centuries. It gave me great insight into Japanese political and cultural history.

Liked It

A good basic history of Japan for the price. Given the thousands of years of history of this complex society, this work is best treated as an introduction that can lead you to detailed works on periods or subjects.

I Needed This

Very comprehensive and well written. A little more detail than I needed in some of the early chapters but an excellent review of ancient Japanese history.
