Since its original publication in 1949, P. D. Ouspensky’s In Search of the Miraculous has been hailed as the most valuable and reliable documentation of G. I. Gurdjieff's thoughts and universal view. This historic and influential work is considered by many to be a primer of mystical thought as expressed through the work, a combination of Eastern philosophies that had for centuries been passed on orally from teacher to student.

Continuing our study of man, we must now speak with more detail about the different states of consciousness. As I have already said, there are four states of consciousness possible for man: Sleep, waking consciousness, self-consciousness, and objective consciousness; but he lives only in two: Partly in sleep and partly in what is called waking consciousness. It is as though he had a four-storied house, but lived only in the two lower stories.

During the mid-30s in Paris, Gurdjieff drew together four women: Solita Solano, Kathryn Hulme, Alice Rohrer, and Elizabeth Gordon - and formed a special, mutually supporting work group. In allegory he explained: You are going on a journey under my guidance, an “inner-world journey” like a high mountain climb where you must be roped together for safety, where each must think of the others on the rope, all for one and one for all. You must, in short, help each other “as hand washes hand”, each contributing to the company according to her lights, according to her means.

In Tertium Organum Ouspensky questions the assumptions we have about our world. In relation to our cognition of the world and of ourselves the conditions would be ideal if it were possible to accept nothing as data and regard everything as requiring definition and proof. In other words, it would be best to assume that we know nothing, and take this as our starting point.
