Sebastian Frost was a man with an interesting reputation. He’d killed 12 giants, eight heroes, a duke, and even a prince. But nobody ever talked about any of that. All they talked about was the deviant, disgusting, detestable Herald of Shalia that shamelessly laid with elves. That was because in the strange world based on game mechanics Frost found himself in, laying with elves was somehow treated like laying with animals. Naturally, they weren’t calling him Herald Frost the giant killer....

Publisher's Summary
Kaiden Jericho's life just went sideways.
He has been working odd jobs since the first school year ended.
(People have to eat, right?)
The problem? He isn't as prepared as he thinks he is.
Out in the jungles of the Amazon, Kaiden meets a new set of nightmares, and death there is permanent.
Even with all his previous training in the Animus, will Kaiden survive?
You don't become the best of the best by staying alive. In the Animus, you are closer to perfection with each death you suffer.
Kaiden Jericho would rather skip the death part, thank you very much.

Well written but oh so short.
It's... ok, but way to short, and ends in an odd way. Even starts in an odd way, doing one of those, "start the story in the middle, then flashback to show us what we missed" things. However, it only does it once, making it feel disjointed as I kept expecting it to flashback every time he lost consciousness. Why even do it at all if you only planned to do it once? Aside from that, every other book has ended in a satisfying way, typically with him beating a midterm test or something. This one ends a week before a vauge test with him dealing with PTSD and fighting Werewolves to build his flagging confidence. If you were going to bring PTSD into this it feels a bit dismissive to have it come off as resolved so fast. Again I have to point out how short this is, shortest book in the series so far if I'm not mistaken. Most of it was focused on Jericho, a few disposable fodder, and a Bounty hunter akin to Boba Fet in reputation. All the other side characters are relogated to little more than a cheering squad. Also, PLEASE don't add some half baked romance with Chio. It's perfectly fine to be opposite genders, and still be friends. It would be refreshing infact. The only real redeeming feature of this book is the Villan. He was interesting, and fun. Though he could have killed everyone easily If he'd stop messing around. Feels a bit lackluster in that regard. As if the only reason he didn't was for the sake of the plot. The narration is as good as always to.

Sadly disappointing
I can only hope this is not a glimpse of what is to come. I loved the first 3 books and was excited to see the fourth had come out but was sorely disappointed upon completion. The image this book leaves me with is one of an author who is eager to pick up pennies instead leaving a lasting impression. I would have rather waited for a complete book instead of a short story that didnt leave me wanting more. Consider this review harsh but it was an utter fail not entertaining and not at all in line with the rest of the series.

abrupt plot shifts make me cranky
there are still lots of big action scenes so those reading the series strickly for the Boom-SMASH, you will probably still enjoy the books. I like BOOM-SMASH well enough, but I also like the storyline to make sense to me. this sudden sideways shift in plot direction doesn't work for me. I spent most of this book (and the ones after it) unable to suspend my disbelief because of a logic flaw; why would an Academy that spends millions on raising each student into an elite allow them to go out before they are even half-trained and go on missions outside Academy supervision and control?! it's fiscally and morally irresponsible, and, quite frankly, completely unbelievable; it's like allowing marine recruits to jump into a combat zone with only three weeks of basic training under their belt. If Kaiden was in his last year at the school it would make a little sense, but in between the first and second years with only 1 year of training? there's too much money wasted should the trainee die before their contract is sold to be a viable option. the whole set up in this book makes no sense. I know the summary says "a guy's got to eat" but that has nothing to do with why he's actually taking these jobs (wants to buy out his contract). I also really dislike the serial killer and ended up FF through his long, rambling chapters. I can understand the appeal to the author to write a challenging antagonist but as a reader, I really don't care about bad guys or their motivations, so when the bad guys are plotting their evil plans I usually end up skipping those chapters entirely. considering that the serial killer is almost the second protagonist for the next few novels, that's A LOT of chapters to skip. normally I feel a certain sense of satisfaction when I finish a novel but at the end of this, all I felt was disappointment, irritation, and frustration. not so good, considering how enjoyable this series was during the first three novels.

Where's the rest?
I'm kind of mad that I paid as much for this as the first few. Right when it seemed like the intro was done and the story was starting it was over. Where's the rest? This felt like half of a book at best. It set up the story that never came.

Really surprised and saddened by the story it’s SO SHORT and goes on tangents. No real LITRPG there either. Very disappointed with the series and won’t be continuing with it
