Publisher's Summary

For centuries, the people of Alera have relied on the power of the furies to protect them from outside invaders. But the gravest threat might be closer than they think.

Tavi has escaped the Calderon Valley and the mysterious attack of the Marat on his homeland. But he is far from safe, as trying to keep up the illusion of being a student while secretly training as one of the First Lord's spies is a dangerous game. And he has not yet learned to use the furies, making him especially vulnerable.

When the attack comes it's on two fronts. A sudden strike threatens the First Lord's life and threatens to plunge the land into civil war. While in the Calderon Valley, the threat faced from the Marat is dwarfed by an ancient menace. And Tavi must learn to harness the furies if he has any chance of fighting the greatest threat Alera has ever known....

It's Finally Here

I'm so glad this series is finally available as an audiobook.

Huge fan of the books and the narrator has done the series justice.
One weird thing though, every now and then a horn will play during the narration.

Other than that it's amazing.

Excellent!

Issues with audio but it doesn't detract from the story. Excellent book and a mature fantasy book!

Oh the stupid musical tone drove me crazy. I almost stopped listening. Other than that it was good.

editing slip ups

loved the story and great work from the narrator but at a couple of points there where mistakes in the edit with the end of words and the space between words having been cut out

Kate Reading is wonderful as usual

Kate reading remains one of my favorite narrators, and the story is interesting. However, half of chapter 50 is missing, and what I assume to be fanfares between cd's in the original production aren't removed in edit.

Chapter 50 has a few important plot points, and it gets really confusing a few chapters later when you notice something's missing.

Narration Problems

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It's a good story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Academ's Fury?

The battle to protect the High Lord.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The use of American pronunciation for basic English words was irritating beyond belief. There were many instances but, missile, fragile and lever will serve as examples.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No.

Any additional comments?

The editing was poor. The sound quality altered dramatically every time a word or sentence was spliced into the narrative which broke concentration and spoiled an otherwise good book.

Huge chunks missing from Audio book

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Actually include the whole book. The audio book skips large chunks at random. For example where are the last 6 pages of chapter 50. This is just one example but the story seems to randomly skip at times, and the few times I went back to the actual book to figure out why its because large chunks of text had been omitted

Who was your favorite character and why?

Katai. I love Katai's outlook on the world

Have you listened to any of Kate Reading’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Kate is always a great narrator and this is up to her usual standard.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I LOVE this book. The audiobook however is broken.

Any additional comments?

Please fix this audiobook, because this great story deserves a great audio book.

good story... BUT

Why the annoying "trumpet blasts" in the story? please take them out... they serve absolutely no purpose!

Great story telling Stupid music

Almost ruined by inappropriate interlude music. Between chapters where the scene changes, there is nothing. Between chapters where there is a dramatic flow continuing from one to the next, interlude music shatters the story, jarring you out of the action. Moronic. Otherwise a really good story and very well narrated.

The series gathers pace.

A satisfying second book that begins to gather pace and flesh out the wider story.

The narrator does a good job, although with Jim Butchers penchant for deep voices, Kate struggles a little in her characterisation. It's not a big issue though.

I'd recommend these books to fans of the genre. Not genre defining but a good listen for sure.

The story continues at great pace....

I listened to this immediately after finishing book #1, and I'm currently downloading book#3. I'm thoroughly enjoying this series, and there is something enormously satisfying about having all the books in the series ready and waiting on audible......

The story cracks along at a great pace - never a dull moment. Although slightly predictable, it does take some unexpected twists/turns to get there. Characterisations are fine, and whilst the narrator is not my favourite, it doesn't detract too much for me.

Other reviewers have mentioned the bad editing- and I agree. There is a large hole in one of the main story arcs right at its climax. I haven't downloaded the e-book to see exactly what is missing, and I don't want to give any spoilers by referencing it here in any detail - just to say that it was slightly disappointing not to get the whole story, but that you can still work out what has happened by the following chapters. (perhaps it wasn't bad editing and the author just chose to do one of those "interpret the outcome" things? tho' doesn't seem to be his style). This is the reason for the reduced star rating.

The most annoying issue with this recording is the random trumpeting. Initially I thought it was at the end of each chapter or section, but there were a few blasts which seemed very randomly placed.

Unfortunately this is my favourite genre and I'm very much enjoying this tale, so I will continue to put up with the bad editing and trumpeting etc as I download the rest of the series.

Good story well told and engaging throughout.

This for some reason had the feel of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table for me. Which I thoroughly enjoyed. Strong characters and a well paced story from start to finish. I will be getting the next book in the series.

Absolutely amazing!

Although I would have preferred a male reading it (due to many of the main characters being male, or having deep, basso voices which Kate tries to emulate which only partially succeeds...), Kate’s calm and clear reading is very nice to listen to and she puts a lot of emotion into the story, characters and dialogue.

A brilliant sequal

including magic, politics, intrigue, danger and relationships. The characters are interesting and tou want to learn more of each, the story threads woven well, intersecting when relevant.
