Publisher's Summary

Essence to gather. Cards to level. A summoner's deck to build.

After the collapse of the known world, Rowan Wilder opened his eyes and found himself on the first floor of the Tower. With a flawless memory and a mere eight cards to his name, he must venture out and prepare himself for the coming calamity.

In this place of blood and fantasy, Rowan has to not only survive, but thrive as he powers his way to the top of the tower. The Demonic Plague that has twisted the creatures on the upper floors is the least of his worries after he reveals the coveted origin of the summoner.

Cane in hand and Summons by his side, he'll have to tear his way through beasts and humans alike as monsters, criminals, and zealots try to hinder his ascent. Of course, he can maintain a sense of decorum while he faces these trials, yeah?

Don't miss the first book in the series A Summoner Awakens, a deck-building LitRPG series utilizing a card-based magic system with loads of customization and steady power progression. Perfect for fans of All the Skills and Towers of Heaven, as well as games such as Slay the Spire, Hearthstone, and Gwent.

An engaging read

I have to admit, loved the narrator. He gave the characters each a life of their own, even the female characters.
Story-wise good, pacing was good. Honestly it was a little flat at the end, but the rest was engaging and the story had depth.
All in all, a read I'd recommend.

Absolutely Brilliant

Absolutely bloody brilliant. I haven't enjoyed a book this much since I first listened to Dungeon Crawler Carl. It's just as well written, and also a great mix of action, adventure, worldbuilding and pathos. Very little humor in this book unfortunately, and what there is, is very dry.

Basic summary: Old dude gets a second chance at life in a universe where everyone lives inside a dungeon and are unable to get out. They use the cards that drop from monsters to give themselves magic and skills to help them 'climb the tower.'

cool concept

he sorry uses a twist on the system genre that can go far. the story is interesting and I can see another 4 to 6 books in the future depending on the pacing. overall I loved the book. only gripe is there could have been a female actor for the female characters (that dosent take away from the great voice that is Jeff hays) tho that is just what I like.

Good story

It was well written and produced.
Very interesting world and concept and I'm curious about what happens in the next book.
The pacing is a little on the plodding side but not so much as to bore me into quitting. The tone is also a little more serious than I prefer and could benefit from more humour.
Despite my preference, this tone and pace does seem appropriate for the storyline and is very consistent with the characters' development - MC in particular.
This is an extremely well thought out book, showing off skill in writing I don't often see in LIT RPG genre.
The stats are not annoying in their frequency, for which I'm eternally grateful.

Jeff Hays does his usual good job narrating but unlike some of his other performances, stops short of nailing it - and I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe he hasn't quite found the 'voice' of this story or the story hasn't quite developed enough to have that unique voice to be found yet. 🤷

In any case, this is well worth the effort and the credit.

Persistence required

Initially I struggled (I don’t know why, or I would say) with this book, at first I tried reading it, was going to give up, however read many recommendations. So then moved to audio and I have really enjoyed the story, enough that I’ll be listening to more!

Highly reccomend it

The first chapter wasn't bad but almost had me switching to a different audio book. By the end of the second chapter, I was intrigued. Then, without warning, a day had passed, and the book was finished, leaving me wishing for more.

it's a little bit different, narrated well, and definitely worth the purchase

Fascinating

The system is interesting with plenty of room for progression. Characters are generally likeable or well done. Looking forward to the next one for sure! A nice reincarnation story.

So much character!

Both the book and the narration were great! A little bit over the top with some of the audio effects or "crowd reactions," but a very enjoyable listen regardless.
I've joined the authors patreon, and everything I read is in the accents of the narrator, so bravo and well done, sir.
