About this listen
The rain fell relentlessly, washing away the remnants of a summer that had never existed. It blurred the windows like the tears neither of them had the strength to shed anymore. The rhythmic patter against the glass echoed through the room, but the silence between them drowned out everything else a silence so thick and suffocating that it screamed in the spaces where words should have been.
Catherine stood by the fireplace; her arms crossed tightly over her chest as though trying to hold herself together physically. Her lips trembled, not from the cold but from frustration that had long since boiled over into something raw and unrecognizable. She stared at the flickering fire, the flames dancing as though mocking the stillness of her heart. The warmth from the embers couldn’t reach her now. Nothing could.
Her fingers gripped the edge of her sweater as though bracing herself for the weight of the words she was about to speak the words that would undo everything they had built. All the moments and promises are now standing on the precipice of destruction.
