Publisher's Summary

A gripping stand-alone thriller from the Sunday Times number one best-selling author of the Logan McRae series.

Welcome to the Misfit Mob... It's where Police Scotland dumps the officers it can't get rid of but wants to: the outcasts, the troublemakers, the compromised. Officers like DC Callum MacGregor, lumbered with all the boring go-nowhere cases. So when an ancient mummy turns up at the Oldcastle tip, it's his job to find out which museum it's been stolen from.

But then Callum uncovers links between his ancient corpse and three missing young men, and life starts to get a lot more interesting. O Division's Major Investigation Teams already have more cases than they can cope with, so, against everyone's better judgment, the Misfit Mob are just going to have to manage this one on their own. No one expects them to succeed, but right now they're the only thing standing between the killer's victims and a slow, lingering death. The question is, can they prove everyone wrong before he strikes again?

Too unbelievable and too long

I persevered with this story even though the dialogue from the beginning was very annoying and unbelievable. No professionals would put up with the banter as suggested by this book from the first chapter on. I actually sped up the speed of the narration just to get through it more quickly. The ending left many ends untied and the solution to the crime was also unbelievable. Sorry I wasted my time listening to this book!

Gripping!

It’s not a Logan Macrae book, but I was captivated nevertheless. The characters are people I enjoyed spending time with, the plot had me gripping the steering wheel as I drove and listened, and I didn’t see the end coming at all. Steve Worsley is his usual brilliant multiple selves. Twenty-one plus hours well spent

Persevere. It's worth it. His best yet.

By the second chapter I was considering abandoning this book. I'd just finished the Logan MacRae series so had high hopes.
I'm so pleased I hung in there. Callum seems doomed and unlikeable, but the story pulls you in, and he becomes very real.
Great yarn. Lots of clever stuff. Can you solve the mysteries?

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole book.

The twists and turns where gripping and the narrator was great. Both thumbs up.
While the length of the book may put some people off, it was a bonus for me.

Fantastic story!

One of the best Stuart McBride has come up with so far.
Twisty, gritty, fast, and with the intrigue and humour that he does so well.
Thoroughly enjoyable. A long listen but worth every minute.
Steve Worsley is brilliant in his narration, as ever.
Well worth a listen.
I hope we see Callum, Franklin, and Willow again, I loved them.

Audible is removing unfavourable reviews.

I submitted an honest review for this hot mess of an audio book which was viewable to other listeners for a while, along with other unfavourable reviews of this book. My review has been removed. The narration of this novel is absolutely dreadful. I am a huge fan of Stuart MacBride but I could not last more than about 5 chapters. Save your money and spend it on a print copy.

Best story yet

This has been the best story yet. It’s so clever in the twists and turns of the plot. Great characters too. The performance made the story come to life and the ending was really unexpected. Loved every minute of it.
