About this listen

Back when they were students, Simon and his friend, Ray, had dreams to become rock stars. Fifteen years later their mid-30s are bearing down fast, and they're having to accept a less glamorous life.

Ray takes refuge from his responsibilities by living a virtual existence in online games. People say he needs to grow up, but everybody finds their own way of coping.

But for Simon it's serial murder, mass slaughter and professional assassination.

Critic Reviews

"Sharply satirical and poignantly funny, this is a gripping and highly entertaining read." ( Time Out)
"A bit like a literary computer game, this novel has plenty of verve and dash." ( Irish Times)

The author’s references to the early years of gaming brought this home for my generation.

Good original story

I loved this when I read it years ago, and it's even better as an audio, with the accents of the characters adding to the setting. Great story, likeable characters (except for the villains), good triumphs but not easily. I especially like that the two protagonists can be a man and a woman who develop a rapport without there having to be a romance. - This author seems to be quite good with strong female characters, and with people who are empowered by their experiences as family members.

one of my favorite books ever
