Sarah Dunant is a historian, novelist and BBC broadcaster. She studied history at Cambridge university from where she went on to join the BBC as a producer and later a presenter of arts programmes. She has written fourteen novels, four of which have been short listed for awards, and edited two books of essays. A founding vice patron of the Women Prize for fiction in the UK, she has sat on the editorial board of the Royal Academy magazine and reviewed for, among others, The Times, The Literary Review, The Guardian and the New York Times. She lectures on art for The Arts Society of Great Britain, has taught renaissance studies at Washington University, St Louis and creative writing at Oxford Brookes university where she was awarded an honorary doctorate for services to literature and higher education. Her last seven novels, all set in the Italian renaissance draw on cutting edge scholarship to forefront and bring alive often forgotten women in this immensely rich period of history.
