W.D. Smith’s leadership story did not begin in a boardroom.
After leaving school in the eleventh grade, serving in the United States military, and later
entering the commercial roofing industry, Smith began a career that would span nearly four
decades and take him from working on rooftops to executive leadership and company ownership.
Along the way, he was shaped by mentors who taught him, challenged him, corrected him,
trusted him with responsibility, and sometimes saw potential in him before he could see it
himself.
Those experiences became the foundation of The Mentor’s Journey, a three-book exploration
of mentorship, leadership, and legacy.
Smith writes from the perspective of a working leader still learning, building, mentoring, and
developing others. His leadership philosophy is practical: standards matter, accountability
matters, people matter, and leadership is ultimately a responsibility to prepare others to carry the
work forward.
