Vicki Tapia is the author of three books. When her parents were both diagnosed with dementia within a few months of each other, she became their caregiver. Out of that experience came her first book, “Somebody Stole My Iron: A Family Memoir of Dementia.” A finalist in the 2015 High Plains Books Awards, it was also named one of the “Best Alzheimer’s Books of All Time” by Book Authority. Tapia’s memoir brings hope to those whose lives have been intimately affected by dementia, letting them know that they are not alone. She is also the author of two works of historical fiction. “Maggie: A Journey of Love, Loss and Survival” is based on the life of her intrepid great-grandmother and was chosen as the solo “Medalist Winner” in the Historical Fiction category for the New Apple Fifth Annual Indie Book Awards. This book was also a finalist for the Book Excellence Awards and the Next Generation Indie Book Awards. “Harry and Grace: A Dakota Love Story” is Tapia’s latest release and tells the story of her paternal grandparents. Set against the harsh realities of life on the North Dakota prairie in the early twentieth century “Harry & Grace” is an “enchanting tale,” sprinkled with magic and woven together by happiness, tragedy, tenderness and sorrow. Vicki has contributed short stories and essays to several anthologies. Along with her writing, she is actively involved in the administration of AlzAuthors.com, a website devoted to bringing together caregivers or those living with memory impairment with books and blogs written about Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.
