Vera Berry, BSN, RN, CWOCN, CPN, C-ELBW, has been a pediatric and neonatal nurse since 1980 and now serves as a certified wound, ostomy, and continence nurse (CWOCN). With decades of experience caring for some of the most vulnerable patients and their families, she has witnessed both the best and the worst of healthcare—from moments of profound compassion to the destructive effects of bullying, toxic leadership, and systemic failures within hospital culture. In her book, Mirrors and Masks: Nobody’s Home Behind the Credentials, Vera draws on her personal experiences and professional insights to expose how narcissistic abuse, gossip, and institutional betrayal harm not only nurses but also patient safety and trust. By weaving together clinical knowledge, spiritual reflection, and lived experience, she challenges the culture of silence in nursing and advocates for compassion, accountability, and meaningful change in healthcare. When she isn’t writing or speaking out for safer, healthier workplaces, Vera continues to mentor nurses, serve on quality and safety committees, and explore the intersection of professional integrity and personal resilience. Her faith has been her anchor throughout her career, keeping her sound of mind, and she speaks candidly about this in her book. With practical, day-to-day guidance, she encourages nurses to move beyond a victim mentality and rediscover the compassion that first called them to the profession.
