Velma Loftin-Stoneburner Velma is a Southern writer whose work carries the cadence of hymns, folktales, and the storytelling traditions of the American South. Rooted in Louisiana’s pine forests, her fiction lives between history and myth, memory and invention. A lifelong student of Southern history, folklore, and women’s hidden narratives, she writes of endurance, silence, and the legacies of war and family. Her characters embody the quiet power of matriarchs and the resilience passed down through generations. Her debut novel, In the Pines, was inspired by Depression-era family stories, followed by We Sent Them All, which explores the hidden costs of war and memory. Murder in the Piney Woods uncovers buried crimes and wrongful conviction. With her husband, R.J. "Josh" Stoneburner, she co-authors the Dark Circus series- Southern Gothic tales of myth and history and The Shadow of Zafir, a geopolitical fable of war and survival. Velma often returns to themes of violence as destiny, silence as defiance, and inheritance as burden. She resists tidy endings, preferring stories that unsettle and echo long after the last page. She lives in Merryville, Louisiana, with her husband, where she gathers stories, tends her animals, and keeps alive the old songs and voices of the South.
