Tonia Bales has been in continuous clinical anesthesia practice since 1991, following her graduation from the University Hospital School of Anesthesia in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her personal story gained international attention through the acclaimed Los Angeles Times podcast Dirty John, later adapted into the Netflix series of the same name and featured across numerous national and international media outlets.
Beyond her clinical work, Tonia is a committed advocate for education and awareness around substance use disorder (SUD) in healthcare. She regularly speaks at anesthesia conferences, drawing on her firsthand experience to help clinicians recognize risk factors, reduce stigma, and strengthen prevention and response efforts within the profession. She is also the mother of two daughters, a role that has deeply informed her perspective on resilience, accountability, and advocacy."  Most recently, Tonia authored her memoir, When You See It, which has become an Amazon bestseller.
