Tom Brand is a veteran farm broadcaster, lifelong advocate for rural communities, and a Missouri farm kid who never quite outgrew the stories that shaped him. Raised in northwest Missouri, Tom learned life’s lessons in places where chores came before cartoons, livestock had more personality than most politicians, and grit wasn’t optional—it was expected. His passion for agriculture and communication led to a long and respected career behind the microphone. Tom served as a farm broadcaster at the Brownfield Network in Jefferson City, Missouri, KMA in Shenandoah, Iowa, and KFEQ in St. Joseph, Missouri. He later became Executive Director of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB), where he worked to elevate the voices of rural America and champion the impact of farm radio nationwide. In Welts on Your Butt a Calf Could Suck: Reflections on Faith, Family, and a Farm Kid’s Life, Tom shares a collection of humorous, heartfelt, and occasionally humbling stories drawn from his upbringing and career. With a voice that’s both familiar and fresh, he captures the quirks, values, and characters that define country life—reminding readers you don’t have to be perfect to have a story worth telling. When he’s not writing, speaking, or answering questions about that unforgettable book title, Tom enjoys spending time with his family, keeping one eye on the markets, and finding joy in the simple things—like a quiet morning, a glass of real lemonade, or a hymn sung with full conviction.
