Todd Crandell, known as THE ORIGINAL SOBER TRIATHLETE™, is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC-S) and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC-CS), as well as the founder of Racing for Recovery. He has dedicated his life to helping individuals transform destructive behaviors into disciplined, purpose-driven action. After a 13-year struggle with drug and alcohol addiction that destroyed relationships and ended a promising hockey career, Crandell rebuilt his life through discipline, endurance, and personal accountability. In 1999, he completed his first triathlon—marking the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of recovery through action. Since then, he has completed over 120 IRONMAN® and Ultraman events across six continents, channeling the same intensity once used for self-destruction into a platform for transformation. His work demonstrates that recovery is not simply about abstinence, but about building a structured, meaningful, and high-performing life. In 2001, Crandell founded Racing for Recovery, a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides education, support, and community for individuals and families affected by addiction. Through weekly support groups, lifestyle restructuring, and a fully holistic approach to personal accountability and long-term well-being, the organization offers a practical and effective alternative to traditional recovery models. Crandell is also the author of multiple books on recovery, mindset, and personal transformation. His story has been featured in documentaries including Addict, Running with Demons, Pure Euphoria, and Racing for Recovery. He and his organization have been featured on platforms including BBC, CNN, ESPN, The New York Times, and Runner’s World, reaching audiences worldwide. A sought-after speaker, Crandell presents at schools, treatment centers, correctional facilities, and organizations both nationally and internationally, delivering a message grounded in lived experience and personal responsibility: With sobriety, anything is possible.
