Thomas J. Ryan graduated from Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia and earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and a Master's degree from the American University School of International Service. He also graduated from a year-long program at the Foreign Language Center of the Defense Language Institute (Vietnamese history, language, and culture), and the U.S. Department of Defense certified him as professional in Education and Language specialties. His latest book, "'Lee is Trapped and Must be Taken,' Eleven Fateful Days after Gettysburg, July 4-14, 1863," won the Edwin C. Bearss Scholarly Research Award and the Hugh G. Earnhart Civil War Scholarship Award. A previous book titled "Spies, Scouts, and Secrets in the Gettysburg Campaign: How the Critical Role of Intelligence Impacted the Outcome of Lee's Invasion of the North, June-July 1863" won the Bachelder-Coddington Literary Award and the Gettysburg Civil War Round Table Distinguished Book Award. He also published a book titled "Essays on Delaware during the Civil War: A Political, Military, and Social Perspective." He is a member of the Editorial Board of Gettysburg Magazine, and since 2002 has contributed eighteen (18) articles to this magazine. He writes book reviews for Civil War News, and has published articles and book reviews in North & South Magazine. America's Civil War Magazine will soon publish two of his articles. For many years he wrote a weekly column titled "Civil War Profiles" for the Coastal Point, a Delaware newspaper. Prior to that, for several years he wrote articles and book reviews for the Civil War Page of the Washington Times newspaper . He is the former president and current member of the Central Delaware CWRT, and a longtime member of the Gettysburg Foundation, American Battlefield Trust, Delaware Historical Society, and Fort Delaware Society. He served three years in the U.S. Army, and 35 years in the U.S. Department of Defense in analytic, managerial, and executive positions related to intelligence operations. During that time, he served in the Philippines ('59) and in Vietnam ('65, '69, and '72-73). Now retired, he and his wife live in Bethany Beach, DE.
