My illustrator has book two, and I'm completing a revision to book three! When I was teaching Creative Writing to middle school students, they were shocked at the challenges writing children's books presented. It's much easier to write almost anything else, I think. However, writing children's books is also a treat; I love to imagine excited young readers as I'm writing. Besides, who doesn't love a good challenge? My own family inspired the Baxter books, but we are not multi-racial. I wanted to keep the family feel the same, but speak to an audience of readers who has few books to look to for inclusion. I'm so thankful my illustrator, Vicki Rushing, was right in line with my ideas.
