I grew up in rural Essex, England. My bedroom looked out over huge fields of wheat and Barley, as a result I find harvest time to be the best time of the year, watching the combine harvesters do their work is magical to me. I was a daydreamer, I liked to lay on the shed roof and imagine that the cumulus clouds were huge spaceships moving slowly through the atmosphere ready to do whatever it was they were going to do.
As I got into my teens those activities faded, but the idea of UFO’s stuck, then one day I got home very late, went to my bedroom, looked out into the dark night sky and saw the unmistakable sight of a UFO that had landed in the field, and of all the places in the world it could have landed it had to be behind MY house. I could see the reflected starlight light in its cockpit window, and I could just about make out its shape. I don’t know how I got to sleep that night, but I did, and in the morning the ‘UFO’ was still there – it was harvest time and the ‘UFO’ was nothing more than a tractor! My mind had filled in the blanks and that made me realise the power of imagination. That was when I first started thinking about writing, but life gets in the way, work, relationships, marriage, becoming a parent, more work, responsibilities… you know how it is.
I’ve had a variety of jobs that were as dull as ditch water, ending up as a technician in an advanced electronics company. It was the eighties and the engineers there were all excited about this thing called the internet. I hadn’t got a clue what they were talking about, but it was going to be the next big thing, apparently. I was given a circuit board, hundreds of tiny components, and told to solder it all together. I did and it worked, they said it was the world’s first ADSL modem, and I had no idea what it did!
Despite the cutting edge work that was being done, higher powers decided that everyone had to be made redundant; that was a blessing in disguise for me, because I met a friend who asked me if I wanted to work at a pop concert and that introduced me to the world of live music production, which I loved and worked in for over twenty five years and still do, off and on.
By 2011 I was having a long drive to and from work, and while travelling I started to think about writing and whether I could come up with better stories than I had been reading. Ideas formed for the plot lines that would end up in the Astrid books. I tentatively started writing and was a little bit coy about it, but once I told friends what I was doing, they got interested and this lifted my confidence. I have now had three novels published with a fourth due soon and two more in production.
So my advice is: if I can do it, anyone can.
