Hello! Plants are my people; terraphilia is my love language. I began my career in field ecology, the study of the natural communities that make Earth a living planet, studying grizzly bear habitat, wildfire, and sagebrush communities. I turned to writing when I realized I loved telling the stories behind the data more than collecting those data. I'm the author of fourteen books, including an Earth-spirituality devotional, memoir, nature writing, travel, gardening, and kids. All explore the interrelationships that form what Aldo Leopold called the "community of the land." My writing has appeared in magazines and newspapers from Audubon and Popular Mechanics to High Country News and the Los Angeles Times - and has been heard on the Martha Stewart Living Radio Network. I’ve won national and regional awards including the Colorado Book Award, Foreword Book of the Year, Sarton Women's Books Award, Children's Book Council "Selector's Choice," and the Mountains & Plains Book Association Award. I belong to an informal network of writers and artists who speak for the land, and to Story Circle Network, Women Writing the West, and Wyoming Writers. I live at the edge of a small town in western Colorado, where mesas and jagged peaks form the skyline, aromatic sagebrush dots the hills, and orchards and organic farms fill the valley bottom. The night skies here are dark and full of stars, and in the daytime abundant sunshine powers my house via the solar panels on my roof. Learn more about me on my bestselling Substack newsletter, Earthbound.
