Hello, I’m Sue Robertson Danells, and if there’s one message I’d love to share with you today, it’s this: you’re never too old to start something new. I spent my working life in education, writing countless reports, documents, you name it. But I never thought I’d write a novel. Teaching children how to craft stories? Absolutely. But writing fiction myself? That felt like something for other people… creative people. Then, thirty years ago, after my father passed away, I started researching our family history. One ancestor’s story, a man who vanished from the records, captured me completely. What began as curiosity became something I couldn’t let go. And slowly, it became When Darkness Falls, my debut novel. I published it at 71. And believe me, I had so much to learn, publishing, formatting, finding a cover… But I did it. Because the story mattered. Because I wanted my 95-year-old mother to hold it in her hands. And because, deep down, I needed to prove to myself that it’s never too late, to do something brave. So if you’ve ever thought, 'I’d love to write a book, but it’s too late for me,' I want to gently say: No, it’s not. You don’t need permission. You just need a story that won’t let you go. I'm Sue Robertson Danells, and I didn’t set out to become a writer. But I became one. And you can, too. Reviews for 'When Darkness Falls' 'Tears and heartbreak, a story of hardship, tenderness, love and tragedy. An extremely thought provoking, beautifully written first novel, which I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.' JS ‘I would just like to say how much I enjoyed ‘When Darkness Falls’. It was one of those books you just do not want to put down, never a dull moment, and you feel the atmosphere, as it is described so well. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, despite their usual genre choice.’ TE ‘I found this book very rich and profoundly moving, I could not put it down. I was entrenched in the characters and the whole atmosphere instantly. A remarkable first novel! Thank you!’ HH I wrote 'Bittersweet' almost immediately, but it sat on the back burner for years. Following that I was inspired to write a crime series, the first of which, 'The Long Game', is due for publication on 2nd June 2025. 'Bittersweet' will follow later this year, and I have the sequel to 'The Long Game', almost ready to publish as my third novel. This series follows DI Maggie Dent in both her working and personal lives. So, there it is. I'm a writer!
