An English teacher at my high school in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania took an interest in the assignments I produced for his class and encouraged me to keep writing. I was to have a forty-three year career as a medical technologist at the Altoona Hospital laboratory before I took him seriously. My life may seem odd kindling for a story about sea creatures in the Gulf of Mexico. But not really. My father worked for the Soil Conservation Service and instilled in me a concern for nature and a love of the environment. My mother was Cajun, born in New Orleans and raised in Houma, Louisiana. Visits with her family during the summer are remembered fondly, especially our trips to “The Two Sisters”, their fishing camp on the bayou. Years later, a CBS report on the plight of the old oil rigs on the Gulf would spark my imagination; my fellow writers at the Altoona Writers Guild would fan the flame. With their encouragement, I fulfilled a dream and wrote “The Castor Oil Rig Tales”, stories which I hope justify my English teacher’s faith in me long ago. So thank you Mr. Dubbs. The tiny flame you started may have taken awhile to ignite, but it never died.
