Sue Johns has a BA (Hons) in English and History from the University of Birmingham, UK, which is where she met her husband Rick. After living and working in, amongst other places, Jakarta, Indonesia and Cape Town, South Africa, they returned to the UK and settled in Worcestershire. They then combined Sue's teaching experience with Rick's business experience to set up an international English language school for professional people: Kingsway English Centre. Over the next 32 years thousands of people from all over the world came to Kingsway for intensive English courses but the pandemic of 2020 led to its closure. Sue and Rick then turned Kingsway English Centre into Kingsway House Business Centre and focused on providing facilities and services for the local business market. In 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Sue used her international contacts to help Ukrainians who wanted to come to the UK. Whilst finding British homes for refugees, she connected with a teenage boy, Yurii, who came to live with her and Rick for 2.5 years and provides the focus for her book, "Leaving Ukraine".
