As a young boy, Steve Potts fastened parts of wood barrels together to make a workable hull. In high school, he built a 14’ model for a local dealer in Charleston, South Carolina, that garnered a reputation for being tough and durable. In 1989, after working two jobs and saving every extra penny he earned from repairing bathtubs late at night, he founded Scout Boats. His company has survived and flourished over the years, through economic cycles, changing times and even Hurricane Hugo. Today, Scout is led by Steve and produces 26 models ranging from 17’-67’ and continues its reputation as being first to market with numerous industry-changing innovations as well as become one of the most respected and sought-after brands in the industry. Through Steve’s leadership, Scout has remained a debt-free company, been a multi-time recipient of the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association Innovation Award and has been named a Roaring Twenties award recipient - one of the 20 best-performing large companies in South Carolina, for numerous years. Steve is also a recipient of the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s Hall of Fame Award.
