Stephen Sheehi is the Sultan Qaboos Professor of Middle East Studies in the Asian and Middle East Studies program, Asian and Pacific Islander American Studies Program and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is also the Director of the Decolonizing Humanities Project. He received his B.A from Temple University and his M.A. and Ph.D from the University of Michigan in Near Eastern Studies. He specializes in the cultural history of the modern Arab world with particular interest in the Arab nahdah, visual culture (most notably, photography), political activism, and modern Arabic literature and thought of Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt. He also researches and writes about psychoanalysis, Islamophobia, and race and Arab Americans in the United States, religious and ethnic minorities in the Middle East, and issues of decoloniality and liberation struggles especially within the context of Palestine.
