Stephen P. Huyler is an art historian, author, curator, cultural anthropologist, and photographer conducting a lifelong survey of the art and people of India, with over 124 months of field research in India during the past 53 years, conducting a cross-cultural survey of Indian Craftsmanship and Ritual art. Documenting the profound meanings and significance of rural India’s sacred arts and crafts, Huyler has come to know and love the country and culture well. Huyler has been the Consultant and Guest Curator for more than twenty-five major museum exhibitions of Indian art for international and Indian art museums and other institutions, such as the American Museum of Natural History, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Mingei International Museum. A leading photographer of India, his extensive image archive has resulted in solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Asian Art Museum (San Francisco), and the Kodak Center for Creative Imaging. Huyler’s previous books include Sonabai: Another Way of Seeing (Mapin Press, 2009), Daughters of India: Art and Identity (Abbeville Press & Mapin Publications, 2008), Meeting God: Elements of Hindu Devotion (Yale University Press, 1999), Gifts of Earth: Terracottas & Clay Sculptures of India (Mapin Press, 1996), Village India, Mud, Mirror, and Thread: Folk Traditions of Rural India (Museum of New Mexico Press, 1994), and Painted Prayers: Women’s Art in Village India (Rizzoli International, 1994). Huyler’s extensive education includes a Ph.D. in Art and Archaeology of South Asia, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (1991) and a BA., Interdepartmental Major in South Asian Studies focused upon Anthropology, History, and Art History, University of Denver (1973).
