I was formally diagnosed with Autism in the fall of 2018, but the diagnosis was no surprise to me. Growing up, I felt like an alien in an unnavigable world. Everything about me was aberrant: I was too loud, too emotional, too anxious, and too sensitive. Soon after I earned my MFA in 1996, I stopped writing and went to law school, only to become disabled with autoimmune disease in my thirties, forcing me to stop practicing law. Even after I quit, I didn't start creative writing again. I could not reconcile my words and my truth with what I believed was “acceptable” literature. Too often in my past, I abdicated my narrative to the people around me who I thought "knew better" than I: family, doctors, specialists, and friends. Now I'm fourteen years sober and I've survived addiction, recovery, divorce, and abuse. I write my truth as it comes to me. Through my writing, whether it's poetry, memoir, or rollicking fun mysteries, I have taken back my narrative, and I hope to inspire and assist other authors to do the same. Bio Signe E. Land earned an MFA in Writing from the University of Minnesota in 1996 and a JD from William Mitchell College of Law in 2006, graduating class valedictorian. She taught creative writing at St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota and practiced law in Minneapolis. Ms. Land’s work has appeared in Bookends Review, Rivet: The Journal of Writing that Risks, Atticus Review, Coachella Review and others. In 2019, Ms. Land won third place in the Kay Snow Poetry Competition and Second Place in Atticus Review’s Flash Non-Fiction Contest, and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in poetry. In 2018, Ms. Land was diagnosed autistic. She lives with her husband, family and a passel of dogs and cats in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas.
