Sebern is the author of the 5-star rated book, Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: Calming the Fear-driven Brain. Norton 2014; reissued in a 10th anniversary edition in 2025. Although the title sounds a bit daunting it is a very readable book. Many readers have told me they have reader more than once, just for pleasure. Through case studies, reader-friendly recaps of neuroscience and neurofeedback and accounts of her personal experience, Sebern challenges many of the assumptions of psychotherapy today. She argues that what we classify now as psychological problems all begin as dysregulations in the brain. Referring to neurofeedback she goes on to say, “It is easier to reach the mind through the brain than it is to reach the brain through the mind.” This premise upends most understanding of mental disorder and how to treat it.

In her latest book, a memoir entitled The Hidden Book of First Things, Sebern calls on journals she kept over the last thirty years to give the reader a personal account of her experience with neurofeedback along with her own psychotherapy, body work and other therapies. She also writes as a therapist sharing deeply engaging case accounts of her often severely traumatized patients and how they too changed with neurofeedback.

She never intended to published these accounts. She wrote to try to understand what she had and was going through as a ‘survivor‘ of childhood trauma and, as it came clear, of the parents who turned away. The candor, observation and insight of this book have been compared to that in the works of Oliver Sacks. She goes just a bit deeper into the neuroscience- it’s fifteen years later. Even more compellingly, as only a memoir could, she invites the reader into her account of the dramatic changes in her interior life and the person who evolved.
