SASHA WAKEFIELD is an Australian with a long-standing connection to Bhutan, where she has lived for extended periods over the past nineteen years, contributing to the preservation of its rich spiritual and cultural traditions. She is a direct disciple of one of Bhutan’s most revered lamas—the reincarnation of the sixty-second Je Khenpo and former Tsugla Lopen of the Central Monastic Body. A mother, wife, former investment banker, and spiritual seeker, Sasha was born to immigrant parents and raised in the beachside suburb of Bronte, Sydney. At the age of ten, she began questioning the meaning of life, setting her on a lifelong search across spiritual traditions and a deep yearning for a teacher. Although drawn to a spiritual path early on, she initially pursued a conventional career, completing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics, finance, and international development. She then worked for over a decade as a derivatives strategist in leading investment banks. Eventually, the call to a deeper path became too strong to ignore, and she left the corporate world behind. Years later, during a chance visit to Bhutan, a series of serendipitous encounters led her to the teacher she had long been seeking. As she puts it, “the rest is history.” Sasha has completed the Ngondro, the foundational set of practices on the Vajrayana path, and authored a practical guide based on her teacher’s instructions. She was chosen by the reincarnation of Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye to assist in editing the English translation of The Melody of the Great Dharma Cloud—a 17th-century biography of Zhabdrung written by Jamyang Palden Gyatsho (Tsang Khenchen) and published by the Central Monastic Body of Bhutan in 2022. In partnership with Rotary Australia, she established a social investment to preserve a historically significant Drukpa Kargyu monastery in Bhutan, ensuring sustainable financial support for the education and basic needs of its young monks. She also taught for many years at Dorden Tashithang Buddhist University in Thimphu. Sasha lives between Byron Bay, Australia and Bhutan, continuing her spiritual training under her teacher’s guidance while supporting the preservation of Bhutan’s sacred traditions.
