After graduating from Cambridge University, Sarah followed her dream to become an RAF helicopter pilot and Squadron leader. She led on operational combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and also became an accomplished risk management and human performance trainer at the world class Defence Academy of the UK. During her experiences both at home and at war, she learnt that tough capable people don’t always feel as strong as they look, but that they don’t necessarily want to spend hours on a chaise longue dredging up their childhood.
She saw a world where leaders often felt hostage to the “fragile” narrative, a world that over-identifies with vulnerability and under-estimates human tenacity and resilience. So she drew on her experiences as a combat helicopter pilot and mindfulness coach to develop a different approach which is empowered and proactive - the Healthy Automatic Behaviours In Threatening Scenarios (H.A.B.I.TS.) Formula. She uses this method to help leaders quieten the inner critic, discover their self belief and understand themselves and others so they can lead fearlessly and skilfully in a world that increasingly needs emotionally intelligent role models. She is fluent in “alpha male” and appeals to a male audience, and is also relates particularly well to strong women who find it “lonely at the top”, or for “future Sarah’s” who are looking for permission to be trail blazers.
The book will focus on:
How understand the mind, particularly when “under threat”.
How to train and ultimately rewire the mind in order to feel in control and resilient in adversity.
How these techniques have been used and proven in combat scenarios and flying missions
How to leverage these skills to relate to others and lead others skilfully and authentically
What people are saying about Sarah:
It was a pleasure to hear you speak earlier, and sparked a number of nerves on my part!! If I had known it was going to be that good, I would have closed the office and told the team to hear you speak. Anonymous, Ex Special Forces
Ex-RAF Squadron Leader, Combat Helicopter Pilot, motivational speaker and yoga warrior – just a few ways to describe Sarah Furness, who regaled our Women’s Inclusive Network today with an inspiring account of how she juggled childcare arrangements as a young mother while managing a squadron of helicopter pilots in the Afghanistan war zone.

"I'd read your bio and I knew about your tours of duty. I was expecting a rough, tough, gruff, sergeant major type. Somewhat unapproachable, someone who I'd feel on the back foot with and not able to engage. In reality you were nothing like that. You showed you were down to earth by explaining your coffee mishap, I immediately relaxed and felt comfortable chatting with you.” Rich Kersey, Marketing Director
