Dr. Ryan Niemiec is a psychologist, coach, researcher, and international workshop leader. He is one of the leading figures in the science and practice of positive psychology, especially the areas of character strengths, mindfulness, and positive interventions. He has authored or co-authored 9 books in these areas for both practitioners and consumers. In 2017, he was inducted to a distinguished group of Fellows in the International Positive Psychology Association. He received a "distinguished early career award" from the American Psychological Association in 2011. Ryan is Education Director of the VIA Institute on Character, the global leader in character strengths. The VIA Institute is a nonprofit in Cincinnati, Ohio with a mission to advance the science and practice of character strengths, across disciplines and people. While Ryan focuses on applications across all fields and people, his biggest interest areas include character strengths in health/wellness, disability, parenting, counseling/coaching, and spirituality/religion. He has penned over 80 scholarly/scientific articles, hundreds of blog/user-friendly articles, and given over 700 public or professional presentations. Ryan regularly offers keynotes and in-depth workshops at international conferences. His passion for these areas has led him to lead several-hundred mindfulness groups over the last decade. He is the creator of the popular, evidence-based Mindfulness-Based Strengths Practice (MBSP), an 8-week program that integrates the best practices of mindfulness and character strengths. It was the first program to use mindfulness to target what is best in human beings and the first manualized program for boosting character strengths .
