Rob Soles grew up in a small town in north central Nebraska, where family gatherings were a fundamental part of his childhood. It was at these gatherings where stories of his great-grandfather, Henry Soles, were passed down from generation to generation. These stories ignited Rob’s imagination, and for years, he thought about his great-grandfather’s journey and all the struggles and fears he must have faced along the way. Rob’s career took him away from Nebraska, but thirty years later, family brought him back with the arrival of his grandson, Henry Soles. In “retirement,” Rob has put into words his dream of how Great-Grandpa Soles arrived in their home state. Rob hopes his version of Great-Grandpa’s journey from Indiana to Nebraska is as enjoyable for you to read as it was for him to write. Rob’s wish is for the oral history of the family to continue being shared into the next generations. Rob still lives in Omaha with his wife, where they continue making family gatherings a tradition.
